County Durham is rolling out a trio of dedicated bus services this summer designed to encourage visitors and locals to experience the county’s rich cultural heritage, historic estates and natural landscapes without depending on private cars. Commissioned by Durham County Council and operating on weekends and bank holidays from 23 May to 31 August, the Durham Explorer network makes touring easier, more affordable and sustainable.

Funded through the North East Mayoral Strategic Authority’s initiative to support accessible transport options, these three routes connect Durham City with major attractions including museums, historic houses, gardens, castles and dramatic natural sites. Many partner venues are offering special incentives to passengers arriving by bus, underscoring a collaborative effort to boost tourism and encourage extended stays throughout the region.

Durham County Council’s Cabinet Member for Leisure, High Streets, Tourism and Regeneration, Councillor Karen Allison, described the service as a fresh opportunity to unlock the breadth of the county’s visitor offerings. She highlighted that the new routes serve historic market towns, peaceful countryside and top attractions alike, making them both a practical option for family day trips and an appealing draw for visitors from farther afield. This enhanced transport network aligns with broader tourism goals, including strengthening the local economy and prompting repeat visits to destinations across County Durham and the wider North East.

Affordable, Accessible Travel for All

One of the key features of the Durham Explorer services is the application of the Mayor’s Fares scheme, which significantly reduces the cost of bus travel. Under this scheme, a single adult journey on the network is priced at just £2.50. Passengers aged 21 and under benefit from an even lower fare of £1 per trip, making travel to attractions highly affordable for students, young families and budget-conscious visitors.

Additionally, County Durham offers a range of day ticket options. An adult County Durham day ticket provides unlimited bus travel within the county for £6, while a broader regional day ticket covering buses and the local Metro system is available for £7.50. Young people can purchase a regionwide day ticket for £3. Children under the age of 11 can travel free during school holiday periods through the Kids Go Free initiative, which allows up to three children to accompany an adult holding a valid ticket or concessionary pass at no extra charge.

All Durham Explorer buses are equipped with accessible access features and welcome dogs on board, ensuring travel is comfortable and inclusive for a wide range of visitors.

Three Routes, Distinct Experiences

The new services, to be operated by Northstar, comprise three distinct lines that each focus on connecting Durham City with different clusters of attractions:

Durham Dales Explorer (Route 873): This line provides a direct link from Durham City to The Auckland Project, the historic complex of galleries and heritage sites in Bishop Auckland. Beyond that, it travels to Raby Castle, Park and Gardens, an iconic moated castle and estate; Barnard Castle, a picturesque market town; The Bowes Museum, known for its art and decorative collections; and finally High Force Waterfall, one of England’s most impressive natural waterfalls.

The Time Traveller Line (Route 874): Designed for history enthusiasts, this route connects Durham City with Ushaw Historic House, Chapels and Gardens — an important cultural estate with architectural and spiritual significance — and Beamish, The Living Museum of the North, an award-winning open-air museum that tells the story of life in the region across different historical periods.

Tracks Through Time Line (Route 875): This service heads from Durham City to Shildon, home of Locomotion — the National Railway Museum’s flagship northern attraction. Locomotion offers a deep dive into the history of rail transport and its transformative impact on industry and communities.

Each of these routes presents a curated sequence of destinations, enabling travellers to plan day trips or a series of visits that explore distinct facets of County Durham’s cultural and natural heritage.

North East Mayor Kim McGuinness emphasized the broader benefits of the initiative, noting that the new bus services improve ease of access to outstanding local attractions while promoting sustainable travel habits. Partner attractions have also welcomed the introduction of the Durham Explorer network.
