Kenya Airways PLC recorded a 9% revenue increase for the six months ending 30 June 2026, recording total revenue of KShs 81 billion. This demonstrates both strong passenger demand and the airline’s solid commercial performance during a challenging global aviation market. Further, the company has recorded an improvement in the usage of aircraft, an improved commercial strategy, and has sustained strong demand for travel, while still operating at reduced capacity.

The airline achieved this growth while operating with 9% lower capacity compared with the previous period. Improved aircraft utilisation, stronger revenue management and enhanced commercial performance helped drive a four-percentage-point increase in cabin factor, supported by higher average coupon values.

“We grew revenue by 9% to KShs 81 billion despite operating with 9% less capacity. The improvement in our cabin factor and the strength of average coupon values demonstrate that demand for our network remains resilient,” said Dr. George Kamal, Ag. Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer.

Resilient Demand Despite Rising Costs and Operational Challenges

Kenya Airways delivered resilient performance during the first half of 2026 despite facing a highly challenging operating environment marked by rising costs and global supply disruptions. A sharp increase in jet fuel prices, mainly triggered by geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, significantly impacted the airline’s expenses.

Fuel costs for Kenya Airways increased by 32% compared with the same period last year, representing around 32% of total operating expenses and approximately 52% of direct operating costs. At the same time, ongoing global supply-chain challenges, including limited availability of essential spare parts, longer delivery timelines and component shortages, affected aircraft availability and operational reliability.

These pressures contributed to a 14% increase in total operating costs, creating additional strain on profitability. As a result, Kenya Airways reported a loss after tax of KShs 16.1 billion for the period, compared with a loss of KShs 12.2 billion recorded during the same period a year earlier. Despite these financial pressures, the airline continued to demonstrate operational resilience and maintained strong passenger demand throughout the period.

“Our focus now is firmly on recovery and building a stronger Kenya Airways. We will continue to manage costs rigorously, conserve cash, restore fleet capacity, reduce leverage and complete our capital raising. These actions are designed to create a more stable platform from which the airline can pursue long-term growth,” noted Kiprono Kittony, Kenya Airways Chairman.

Fleet Recovery Strengthens Kenya Airways’ Future Growth Outlook

Kenya Airways is set to benefit from improved fleet availability following the return of additional aircraft to active service after the reporting period. A Boeing 787-8 rejoined operations in mid-July 2026, while a Boeing 777-300ER has also been redelivered and reinstated into the airline’s fleet.

The restoration of aircraft capacity is expected to enhance Kenya Airways’ network strength, increase operational flexibility and allow the airline to respond more effectively to rising passenger demand as market conditions continue to improve.

Strengthening Kenya Airways Through Strategic Priorities

Kenya Airways is focusing on several key measures to build a stronger and more sustainable future. The airline’s priorities include restoring fleet availability through disciplined capacity management, accelerating cost-efficiency programmes while protecting cash flow and improving liquidity.

The carrier is also working to enhance operational reliability, strengthen aircraft utilisation and improve overall resilience across its network. In addition, completing the planned capital raising remains a key step towards creating a stronger financial foundation and supporting long-term growth.

Looking ahead, KQ Chairman said the national carrier remained focused on maintaining a disciplined approach to capacity and expenditure while ensuring that it is positioned to respond quickly as market conditions improve.

“We remain confident in the long-term prospects of the airline and its role in connecting Africa to the world. We remain focused on strengthening our operational and financial foundations while continuing to deliver reliable connectivity to our customers and supporting the broader economic and tourism ecosystem in the markets we serve.”
