The UK’s fastest-growing tour operator, easyJet Holidays, has introduced a unique promotion called “Grans Go Free,” a creative variation of the traditional ‘Kids Go Free’ concept. This initiative comes in response to recent research indicating that 51% of families have never traveled abroad with their grandparents.

Under this unprecedented offer, seniors can now travel free of charge on family bookings to various European destinations, such as Spain, Greece, and Italy. This allows families to enjoy more quality time together at a reduced cost. The launch coincides with the final week of the easyJet Holidays Big Orange Sale, offering customers discounts of up to £400 until Monday.

According to a survey of 2,000 British adults, 56% express regret about not spending enough time with their grandparents, and 54% express the intention to include them in upcoming holidays. The ‘Grans Go Free’ promotion aims to promote ‘3G’ holidays, defined as getaways involving three generations or more, a trend that has seen an increase in popularity.

A significant portion of respondents (59%) expresses a desire to spend more time with older family members, with 57% wanting to create lasting memories with their grandparents during vacations. Despite 77% acknowledging the special bond between grandparents and grandchildren, 27% admit to communicating with their grandparents less than once a week.

Matt Callaghan, Chief Operating Officer at easyJet Holidays said: “We’re proud to offer thousands of free kids places, but we feel it’s time to recognise the Grandparents. This research shows how important grandparent and grandchild relationships are and how much can be learned from making time for them. We’ve launched our ‘Grans Go Free’ offer to tighten these important family relationships and allow travellers to get even better value, in addition to our Big Orange Sale.”

“More families are choosing to holiday with grandparents, recognising the joy of a getaway is amplified when shared across generations. They are able to create new family memories which each generation will cherish – and for some of the parents, they might even have a free babysitter on hand too.”

Three-quarters (73%) of respondents would use the opportunity of a holiday to learn more about their grandparents’ lives, with 49% seeking to benefit from their wisdom. Additionally, 23% believe that going on vacation with grandparents helps strengthen family bonds.

Popular destinations for multi-generational holidays abroad include Spain (18%), Italy (13%), and France (13%). Interestingly, 54% are open to letting their grandparents choose the destination for a trip together. Despite 45% of respondents acknowledging that grandparents are often the bigger earners in the family, only 35% would expect them to contribute financially, preferring to treat them instead.

If financial contributions were expected, 39% would ask grandparents to cover only their share of the holiday, while 21% would request them to pay for a meal or two during the trip. The ‘Grans Go Free’ offer has limited spaces, and eligibility requires the grandparent to travel as part of a family booking with at least one child. Proof of age and relation will be verified upon arrival at the hotel destination.
