US joins UK, Germany and Italy to power Zagreb tourism as overseas visitors near eighty-nine percent of July overnight stays. Here is what you need to know. Official data shows foreign travellers now dominate Zagreb’s summer market. So, what you need to know is simple: international demand stayed far stronger than domestic travel. Foreign arrivals slipped only slightly, while domestic arrivals fell sharply. Therefore, Zagreb’s July tourism story is increasingly international, short-stay and driven by resilient overseas demand in 2026.

Zagreb Tourism Data Shows International Visitors Leading the Market

The July numbers underline how dependent Zagreb’s summer city tourism is on overseas demand. Of the 146,460 arrivals recorded during the month, 129,535 were foreign, representing about 88.4% of all arrivals when calculated from the official figures.

International travellers were even more dominant in overnight stays. Their 238,940 nights represented approximately 88.9% of Zagreb’s total commercial-accommodation nights in July.

However, the city recorded a softer overall July than a year earlier. Total arrivals declined 3.6%, while total overnight stays fell 4.5% compared with July 2025.

Zagreb’s June and July 2026 tourism data shows a clear shift towards stronger international dependence. Total arrivals rose from 132,293 in June to 146,460 in July, while overnight stays increased more modestly. Foreign visitors became more dominant, accounting for about 88.4% of arrivals and 88.9% of overnight stays in July. However, domestic tourism weakened sharply, with domestic arrivals down 20.7% and domestic nights down 21.1% year on year. Average stays also shortened slightly, from 1.96 nights in June to 1.84 nights in July, reinforcing Zagreb’s profile as a short-stay European city-break destination.

Foreign Travel Holds Up as Zagreb’s Domestic Market Weakens

The most important July development is the difference between domestic and foreign demand.

Foreign arrivals were only 0.9% below July 2025, while international overnight stays declined 1.9%. Domestic arrivals, by contrast, fell 20.7%, and domestic nights declined 21.1%.

That makes Zagreb’s overall fall easier to understand. The decline did not come from an equally sharp contraction across every visitor segment. Instead, international demand remained close to the previous year while the domestic market weakened substantially.

June had shown almost the opposite pattern. Domestic arrivals increased 17.2% and domestic nights rose 16.2%, while foreign arrivals declined 5% and foreign nights slipped just 0.5%.

Zagreb Strengthens Its Short-Stay European City-Break Profile

Official June and July data also point towards Zagreb’s role as a short-duration urban destination.

Dividing overnight stays by arrivals gives an average stay of approximately 1.96 nights in June and 1.84 nights in July.

Foreign visitors averaged about two nights in June and around 1.84 nights in July. That pattern is markedly different from Croatia’s coastal leisure destinations, where longer holiday stays generate a much larger volume of nights per arrival.

For travellers, Zagreb therefore fits naturally into short European itineraries, weekend breaks and multi-destination Croatia trips rather than functioning solely as a long-stay summer destination.

Germany, Italy, US and UK Help Shape Zagreb’s International Demand

Official Croatian statistics also show the diversity of Zagreb’s international source markets.

In January 2026, the largest shares of foreign tourist nights in Zagreb came from Germany, Italy, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, the United States, Austria, Slovenia and the United Kingdom.

Germany generated 9.5% of foreign nights, followed by Italy at 9.3%, Bosnia and Herzegovina at 7.5%, Serbia at 6.6% and the United States at 5.9%. Austria, Slovenia and the UK were also among the leading identified markets.

These figures apply specifically to January, so they should not be presented as Zagreb’s July market ranking. They nevertheless demonstrate the mix of regional European and long-haul demand supporting the capital.

Croatia Grows Even as Zagreb Records a Softer July

Zagreb’s July performance also differs from Croatia’s national commercial-accommodation trend.

Across Croatia, July 2026 produced 4.476 million arrivals and 25.264 million overnight stays. Arrivals increased 2.7% and overnight stays rose 1.2% year on year. Foreign visitors alone generated more than 4.06 million arrivals and 23.41 million nights.

This shows why Zagreb should be analysed separately from Croatia’s dominant coastal tourism market.

Continental Croatia Reaches 3.8 Million Nights as National Tourism Tops 90 Million

Croatia’s wider 2026 picture remained positive through August.

Croatian National Tourist Board eVisitor data show 17.5 million arrivals and 90.5 million overnight stays from January through August, with both measures increasing 1% year on year. The Adriatic generated 86.7 million nights, while continental Croatia, including Zagreb, produced 3.8 million overnight stays, also up 1%.

August alone generated more than 5 million arrivals and 31.4 million nights nationwide.

The figures show two connected but different tourism stories. Croatia continues to expand nationally, while Zagreb’s July market became increasingly international despite a modest overall decline. For the capital, foreign travellers remain central to tourism demand, reinforcing Zagreb’s position as a short-stay European city destination within Croatia’s much larger tourism economy.

US Joins UK, Germany and Italy to Power Zagreb Tourism as Overseas Visitors Near Eighty-Nine Percent of July Overnight Stays: What You Need to Know. The answer lies in Zagreb’s strong international visitor mix. Foreign travellers generated about 88.9% of July overnight stays, while domestic nights fell sharply from a year earlier. Germany, Italy, the US and UK were among the officially identified source markets in 2026, although the available country ranking refers to January, not July. Zagreb therefore remains highly reliant on overseas travel, reinforcing its role as a short-stay European city destination within Croatia’s wider tourism economy overall.
