Qantas Airways Unleashes a Historic Australian Aviation Triumph as Airbus A350 Conquers the Skies on an Epic 24-Hour Melbourne-to-France Flight and Ignites a Bold New Era of Nonstop Global Travel

A new frontier in ultra-long-haul travel has been reached after an Airbus A350-1000ULR was flown nonstop from Melbourne in Australia to Toulouse in France for 24 hours and 24 minutes. The remarkable test was completed as part of Qantas Project Sunrise, through which direct passenger services from Sydney to London and New York are being prepared.

A distance of 23,075 kilometres was covered without a refuelling stop. The journey was completed on Tuesday, 28 July 2026, and was described as the longest nonstop test flight undertaken by a commercial airliner. However, it was not operated as a scheduled commercial passenger service. Testing and technical personnel were carried instead of fare-paying travellers.

The achievement has been viewed as an important technical step towards the introduction of some of the world’s longest scheduled passenger flights. Through the removal of traditional transit stops, the way Australia is connected with Europe and the eastern United States could eventually be transformed.

Melbourne and Toulouse Are Linked by an Extraordinary Test Journey

The aircraft was flown from Melbourne to Toulouse, the French city where Airbus maintains major manufacturing and testing operations. A carefully extended route was followed so that the aircraft and its systems could be examined during an exceptionally long period in the air.

A total flying time of 24 hours and 24 minutes was recorded. Across that period, 23,075 kilometres were covered. Two oceans and three continents were crossed, while two sunrises and two sunsets were experienced by those aboard the aircraft.

The return operation was deliberately made longer. Its purpose was not simply to transport the aircraft back to France. Endurance, fuel systems and other specially developed features were required to be assessed as part of the continuing test and certification programme.

Why the Journey Has Been Described as Record-Breaking

The endurance flight exceeded the widely cited commercial-airliner record established by a Boeing 777-200LR in November 2005. That aircraft was flown from Hong Kong to London by an eastbound route and remained airborne for 22 hours and 42 minutes.

By comparison, the Airbus A350-1000ULR test lasted almost two hours longer. A major aviation milestone was therefore surpassed, although an important distinction must be maintained. The Melbourne–Toulouse journey was a test operation rather than a regular passenger flight available for public booking.

Even so, the flight’s importance for travellers should not be underestimated. Aircraft endurance at this level has shown that extremely distant cities can be linked without the technical need for an intermediate stop. The focus will now be placed on obtaining certification, completing the interior and preparing the aircraft for normal airline operations.

Only 238 Passenger Seats Will Be Installed

A relatively low-density cabin will be fitted inside the Qantas A350-1000ULR. Only 238 passengers will be accommodated across First, Business, Premium Economy and Economy cabins.

This configuration will differ noticeably from that of many wide-body aircraft used on conventional international routes. Rather than maximum seat density being pursued, passenger comfort and endurance will be prioritised.

The choice will also have a commercial effect. A larger share of premium accommodation will be offered, and the operating costs of carrying fewer passengers over an enormous distance will need to be recovered. Consequently, nonstop tickets could be priced above some one-stop alternatives, particularly during periods of strong demand.

Passenger Wellbeing Is Being Treated as a Central Travel Issue

Spending close to a full day inside an aircraft will create challenges beyond fuel capacity and mechanical performance. Fatigue, dehydration, restricted movement and disruption to body clocks will all need to be managed.

A dedicated Wellbeing Zone will therefore be provided between the Premium Economy and Economy cabins. Sculpted wall panels, integrated stretch handles, an on-screen movement programme and a hydration station will be made available.

Twelve cabin-lighting scenes will also be installed. Their timing and colours have been developed with circadian rhythms in mind, allowing travellers to be guided gradually towards the time zone of their destination.

Australia Could Become More Accessible to Long-Haul Visitors

The largest travel benefit could be felt by visitors who have previously considered Australia too distant for a manageable holiday. A nonstop link will not make the geographical distance smaller, but the experience could be simplified.

European travellers could arrive without changing aircraft at an Asian or Middle Eastern hub. Australian travellers could reach London without passing through an intermediate airport. Business journeys, family visits and tightly scheduled holidays could therefore be made more convenient.

The route could also strengthen Sydney’s position as a major gateway. Domestic connections to Melbourne, Brisbane, Adelaide, Perth and regional destinations could be added after arrival, while international visitors could be encouraged to build broader Australian itineraries.

A stopover will still be preferred by many passengers. Lower fares, a break between long sectors and the opportunity to visit a second destination will continue to make connecting journeys attractive. Project Sunrise will instead provide another choice for travellers who value speed and simplicity.

The Record Does Not Mean Passenger Flights Are Ready Yet

Several development stages must still be completed before scheduled passengers are carried. Certification tests, ground inspections, aircraft delivery, crew preparation and regulatory approvals will all be required.

Commercial schedules will also need to be supported by careful fuel planning, weather analysis and diversion arrangements. Suitable alternate airports must remain available along the route, even when a flight is being marketed as nonstop.

The test should therefore be viewed as a major development milestone rather than the immediate launch of a bookable service. Daily Sydney–London operations are currently planned for October 2027, while subsequent Project Sunrise expansion will be determined by aircraft deliveries, approvals and market demand.

Nevertheless, the Melbourne–Toulouse flight has provided powerful evidence that the necessary aircraft capability is being developed successfully. A journey once regarded as commercially impractical is being moved steadily towards scheduled operation.

A New Era of Direct Global Travel Is Being Prepared

The 24-hour and 24-minute test has marked more than an aviation endurance record. A practical demonstration of future nonstop travel has been delivered between two widely separated continents.

For passengers, reduced total journey time, fewer airport transfers and simpler baggage handling could be provided. At the same time, the physical demands of spending almost a day in the air will need to be carefully considered.

Once Qantas Project Sunrise services are launched, choice rather than universal replacement will be created. Connecting itineraries will remain important, while a premium nonstop alternative will be offered to travellers seeking the quickest direct passage.

Through this record-setting test, the final technical barriers separating Australia from direct links to London and New York have been brought closer to removal. The era of the 20-hour scheduled passenger flight is no longer being imagined. It is being prepared.
