In a recent summit organized in Valletta, the ministers accountable for tourism in nine Mediterranean countries have decided to work jointly towards sustainable tourism in the Mediterranean region.

The ministers of Croatia, Cyprus, Malta, Greece, Egypt, Libya, Italy, Palestine and Spain reached to a common ground at the end of the summit of the Mediterranean Tourism Forum, which was hosted at the Mediterranean Conference Centre.

The Ministry for Tourism, Malta, said that the ministers have together settled to grow their assistance to extend the welfares of the Mediterranean region at the United Nations World Tourism Organization and to enable practices that would encourage sustainability in all facets of tourism.

Also, the countries agreed to share guidelines, statistics, and proposals, and on latest developments in tourism, they would also keep each other updated.

As a major success, Minister Clayton Bartolo hailed the summit on the strength of the contract and on the negotiations that took place ahead of it.

He highlighted that climate change was critically disturbing the Mediterranean, as was made clear in the summer 2022.

So, they must cooperate on an international scale so that they all can revolutionize further to grow a tourism model on the basis of sustainability, he said.

Mediterranean Tourism Foundation

The Mediterranean Tourism Foundation (MTF), inaugurated by the Malta Hotels and Restaurants Association (MHRA) on November 28, 2013, serves as a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism growth throughout the Mediterranean region. The Secretariat’s Statutes were formally adopted on December 4, 2015, by the Administrative Council of the MTF, solidifying its organizational framework.

With a vision shaped by the collective will of both public and private stakeholders in the tourism sector, the MTF aspires to transform the Mediterranean into a haven of peace, cooperation, and prosperity. By focusing on sustainable tourism, the foundation seeks to unlock the region’s potential for growth in a responsible and environmentally conscious manner.

The Mediterranean Tourism Foundation’s role extends beyond mere advocacy, as the Secretariat actively engages in regional cooperation projects. By doing so, it contributes to the co-ownership of new Mediterranean relations, specifically in areas related to tourism. This collaborative approach aligns with the broader goal of revitalizing efforts to make the Mediterranean not only a premier tourist destination but also a model of harmonious and sustainable development. Through its initiatives, the MTF stands as a beacon for promoting responsible tourism practices and fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, working towards a shared vision of a thriving and sustainable Mediterranean tourism landscape.
