$9 million funding to Greater Vancouver Harbour Authority to install shore power equipment at Ogden Point

Victoria’s Ogden Point cruise ship terminal is set to install shore power equipment, following in the footsteps of Vancouver’s Canada Place cruise ship terminal. The move will allow berthed ships to connect to the grid’s clean hydroelectricity, thereby significantly reducing emissions.

The provincial government has provided $9m to the Greater Vancouver Harbour Authority to undertake the installation. The Ogden Point terminal will now be equipped with shore power at both berths, with the port authority working with BC Hydro and the local government on the installation.

The shore power was first installed at Canada Place in Vancouver in 2009, making it the first Canadian facility to do so and only the third in the world. This technology is estimated to save an average of 16 tonnes in fuel, reduce 50.6 tonnes in net greenhouse gas emissions and reduce 1.1 tonnes in criteria air contaminants per ship call.

In 2023, 320 cruise ships are expected to visit the Ogden Point terminal, bringing 850,000 passengers. In Vancouver, 331 cruise ships are set to visit Canada Place, with a total of 1.3 million passengers, assuming ships are at capacity.

The move is the most significant upgrade to the Ogden Point terminal since 2020’s completion of the $6.8m, 58-metre extension to Pier B mooring dolphin, which allowed Victoria to handle newer, larger cruise ships.
