Abu Dhabi Transport (ADT) has officially invited expressions of interest (EOI) for the design and build contract of the Abu Dhabi Light Rail Transit Line 4 (LRT4) project. This ambitious project, which will span 19 kilometres and feature 23 stations, aims to significantly enhance the city’s public transport network and further Abu Dhabi’s vision of becoming a smart, sustainable city. The LRT4 line will be a vital addition to the Emirate’s existing multimodal transport infrastructure, offering seamless connections between some of the city’s most important destinations.
Project Overview and Scope

The LRT4 light rail line will connect Zayed International Airport, Al Raha Beach, and Yas Island, three of Abu Dhabi’s most significant urban and tourist destinations. The new line will create a modern, efficient alternative to road transport, reducing congestion and improving mobility for residents, commuters, and visitors alike.
The scope of the project, as outlined in the EOI, will cover the full design and build process, including civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, along with station construction, track laying, and the procurement of a fleet of 25 Light Rail Vehicles (LRVs). The successful bidder will also be responsible for the design and installation of essential railway systems, including signalling, telecommunications, power supply, and supervisory control and data acquisition (Scada) systems. Additionally, the contract will include the development of a new depot to maintain the fleet of LRVs, which will be essential for ensuring the smooth operation of the service once it is operational.

Strategic Vision for Multimodal Transport
The LRT4 project is a significant milestone in Abu Dhabi’s ongoing efforts to build a smart, integrated transport system. According to ADT CEO Saeed Salem AlSuwaidi, the project reflects the Emirate’s strategic vision to advance urban sustainability and diversify its economy. He emphasized that the light rail system would play a key role in reducing Abu Dhabi’s reliance on private cars, enhancing air quality, and offering a more efficient, eco-friendly transport option for residents and tourists.

The LRT4 line is also part of a broader, long-term initiative to transform the city’s transport landscape by creating a multimodal network that combines light rail, buses, taxis, and other public transport options. By offering greater connectivity and easier access to key locations, the LRT4 will enhance Abu Dhabi’s appeal as a modern, world-class city, while promoting the use of public transportation.
Future Expansion Plans
The LRT4 line is just the beginning of Abu Dhabi’s rail ambitions. Following the completion of the 19km stretch, future phases will see the line extended to Khalifa City and other areas of Yas Island, further enhancing the city’s transport capacity. The expansion of the line will accommodate growing demand from both the local population and the tourism sector, providing greater access to key attractions such as Yas Marina Circuit, Ferrari World, and Yas Waterworld.
The future phases of the project will also contribute to the long-term sustainability goals of the Emirate by continuing to improve transport efficiency and reduce congestion. As the city continues to grow and develop, the light rail network will become an essential part of the urban landscape, supporting both the daily commute and the tourism industry.
Timeline for Construction and Operations
Construction for the LRT4 project is slated to begin in 2026, with operations set to commence by 2030. The project is expected to be completed in phases, with the first phase of the line expected to open to the public in the latter part of the decade. This timeline aligns with Abu Dhabi’s broader urban development goals, which include providing sustainable, smart solutions to the challenges posed by rapid urbanization.
Once operational, the LRT4 line will provide an efficient, reliable, and environmentally friendly mode of transport for both residents and visitors. It will play a key role in shaping the future of Abu Dhabi’s public transport system, complementing existing infrastructure and making the city more accessible to everyone.
