The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office (ACSO) will extend its law enforcement services at Oakland International Airport (OAK) until 2031, following approvals by the Oakland Board of Port Commissioners and the Alameda County Board of Supervisors. This continuation results from decisions made last year and earlier this year, initiating a new contract period starting in July 2024.

Under the agreement with the Port, ACSO’s duties include patrolling the airport’s premises. This collaboration between the Port and ACSO began in 2004, aiming to tackle terrorism, criminal threats, and other security challenges, thereby ensuring the safety and security of both passengers and staff at OAK. The ACSO is part of a broader security network at the airport that includes the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI), Oakland Police Department (OPD), the Port’s Aviation Security team, and private security firms hired by the Port. These organizations collectively contribute to the airport’s protection against potential dangers.

“Our relationship with Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is an essential one for the safe, secure, and smooth operation of Oakland International Airport,” says Craig Simon, Interim Director of Aviation at the Port of Oakland. “We look forward to continuing this partnership under the renewed contract and thank ACSO for the valuable law enforcement services that they provide here at OAK every day.”

“The Alameda County Sheriff’s Office is excited to continue our partnership with the Port of Oakland and the Oakland International Airport. We look forward to providing outstanding Police Services for OAK and its customers,” says Commander C. Lucia of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office.

OAK advises passengers to dial 911 in case of any criminal or emergency situations at the airport and emphasizes the importance of vigilance: if you observe any suspicious behavior, it’s crucial to report it to the appropriate law enforcement authorities.
