Air Canada is set to introduce sweeping changes to its Aeroplan loyalty program, a move that will reshape how travelers earn and redeem points. Under the new framework, Aeroplan members will earn points based on dollars spent rather than the distance traveled, significantly altering the rewards landscape for frequent flyers. This transformation also introduces Status Qualifying Credits (SQC), a new way for members to qualify for Aeroplan Elite status, making the program more aligned with spending patterns and engagement.

These changes, expected to benefit travelers across Canada, the US, and international routes, are designed to offer greater recognition to members who invest more in Air Canada and engage actively with the program’s partners. Aeroplan’s move reflects the evolving preferences of modern travelers who prioritize flexibility, value, and personalized benefits.

The new system will see members earning at least one Aeroplan point per dollar spent on eligible Air Canada flights. For example, a base fare of $427 (excluding taxes and fees) will yield 427 Aeroplan points, enabling members to accumulate points more rapidly through frequent flying and spending. Additionally, the revamped program will feature frequent bonus point offers that allow members to reach rewards faster, enhancing the overall travel experience.

Changes to Aeroplan Elite Status

Aeroplan members aiming for Elite status will also see key modifications. Starting in 2026, Elite status will be based on the number of Status Qualifying Credits (SQC) accumulated, rather than the traditional method of qualifying through flight segments or miles. This single qualification path will include earning up to four SQCs per dollar spent on eligible Air Canada flights, with additional credits available through Aeroplan credit card purchases and activities with the program’s travel and everyday partners.

The SQC-based model aims to simplify the process of achieving and maintaining Elite status, which will now recognize a broader range of member activities. Those who spend more across various program touchpoints, including Air Canada flights, credit card spending, and partner activity, will have more opportunities to earn status and unlock exclusive benefits.

More Ways to Earn and Redeem Aeroplan Points

The new system will not only make it easier for travelers to earn points but also provide more flexible redemption options. Members will be able to use their Aeroplan points on over 45 airlines, accessing more than 1,300 destinations worldwide, with no blackout dates or surcharges. In addition, members can redeem their points for various travel-related perks, such as one-way short-haul flights from just 6,000 points, or book stays at more than 9,000 hotel partner properties through the Aeroplan HotelSavers program. Aeroplan members can also use their points to shop at popular brands like Amazon, Apple, and Dyson, starting from as little as 3,500 points.

The expanded network of travel partners, coupled with new earning and redemption methods, reflects Air Canada’s commitment to providing its members with greater value and more choices. The changes are expected to appeal to a wide range of travelers, from those booking domestic flights across Canada to international jet-setters heading to global destinations.

Core and Milestone Benefits

In addition to more straightforward ways of earning points and qualifying for Elite status, Aeroplan will continue to offer its Core Benefits, which include complimentary checked bags, priority airport services, and other exclusive travel perks. Moreover, members who hit milestones in the SQC-based system will unlock Milestone Benefits, including bonus SQC, Status Passes, and additional travel-related rewards. This tiered approach to status will allow members to enjoy incremental benefits as they progress through the program, incentivizing continued engagement.

Beginning in 2027, Aeroplan will also offer a 10% Head Start on SQC for primary Aeroplan premium credit cardholders who qualify for Elite status. This bonus will be based on the previous year’s earnings, further motivating members to maximize their engagement with the program and build on their loyalty.

The Future of Aeroplan and the Freddie Awards

Aeroplan’s recent recognition at the 2025 Freddie Awards, where it earned three top honors, is a testament to the program’s success and the loyalty it garners from its members. These accolades – Program of the Year, Best Elite Program, and Best Promotion for its 40th Anniversary Campaign – reinforce Aeroplan’s position as one of the most rewarding and widely recognized travel loyalty programs globally.

The upcoming changes to the Aeroplan program will not only enhance the member experience but also solidify Air Canada’s competitive edge in the ever-evolving world of loyalty programs. With more opportunities to earn and redeem points, along with a simplified pathway to Elite status, Aeroplan is positioned to remain a leader in the travel loyalty space, catering to the needs of both frequent flyers and occasional travelers alike.
