As travelers seek to make the most of their budgets in 2025, low-cost airlines continue to redefine the global flying experience. The affordability-first approach of key players like AirAsia, Allegiant Air, and Wizz Air is reshaping expectations of what low-fare travel can offer—without necessarily compromising safety or basic service quality.
These three carriers have emerged as standout performers in the post-pandemic travel economy, each bringing a distinct strategy to dominate their respective markets. From Southeast Asia to Eastern Europe to North America, they illustrate how budget carriers can lead with both pricing power and operational efficiency.

AirAsia remains the World’s Best Low-Cost Airline (16th year from 19th year of the awards) at the Skytrax World Airline Awards, which is the global benchmark of airline excellence and one of the most trusted seal of quality in the world of travel. Based in Malaysia, AirAsia is still the leader of Southeast Asia with its super low-cost prices, extensive network throughout Asia-Pacific and no-gimmick service style that suits holidaymakers and bargain hunters alike.
The Singapore Airlines Group, of which Scoot is a part, has been named the “Best Long-Haul Low-Cost Airline” in both 2015, 2016 and 2018, with Scoot adopted in 2017. And therein lies the secret of Scoot’s success: it marries the affordability of low-cost flying with the operational excellence of a full-service parent. It enables the company to provide intercontinental flights with upgraded comfort to traditional airline prices.

These awards recognize not only price, but the capacity of select low-cost carriers to provide reliability, safety and the comfort of basic amenities — must-haves that fly in the face of the budget-flight stereotype of inherently unpleasant and unreliable service.
The competitive environment of low-fare carriers in North America has also changed. The United States-based ultra-low-cost airline Allegiant Air has been named North America’s Best Low-Cost Airline at the 2025 Skytrax Awards. Bypassed by major airlines, Allegiant has thrived serving secondary airports and concentrating on point-to-point leisure destinations, a focus that keeps overhead low and translates to savings for travelers.

Spirit Airlines — another budget favorite in the U.S. — remains one of the cheapest domestic airlines in 2025 as well, WalletHub found in its annual airline report. Yet Spirit — known for its low fares — is ranked among the lowest in customer satisfaction because it charges extra for carry-on bags, seat selection and other amenities that are included in the price of a ticket on full-service airlines. Yet it has become a go-to choice for price-conscious travelers because its base fares always remain so low.
The Department of Transportation (DOT) maintains transparency through their Domestic Airline Fares Consumer Report, and validates that Spirit and Allegiant are the cheapest with average fares. These numbers are drawn from actual fare offerings and do not include add-ons, which provides travelers with a realistic view of which carriers really do offer the lowest upfront prices.
WalletHub’s 2025 report, again highlights this disconnect between affordability and quality of life. While Spirit is No. 1 in ticket price, other airlines, like JetBlue, Delta Air Lines and Hawaiian Airlines, rank higher than Spirit for reliability, comfort and how happy customers were with the airline. Those distinctions give travelers a clearer sense of trade-offs: Other things being equal, lower fares may be accompanied by fewer amenities and less flexibility.
Within Europe and the Middle East, no-frills carriers such as Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air still reign supreme for travel connecting within a region. Of all the carriers, Wizz Air has been one of the most aggressive at expanding, first from its base in Hungary and most recently with Wizz Air Abu Dhabi, which now operates flights through the Middle East. The airline has been able to sell tickets at near rock-bottom fare levels by minimizing turnaround time, homogenizing their fleet model and adopting digital tools for check-in among others, has recently reported The Times of India.
The newcomer of the moment is Norse Atlantic Airways, based in Norway, which also has plans to shake up the long-haul game, with rock-bottom prices on flights from North America to Europe. A new Washington Post feature reveals how Norse Atlantic combines ultra-low pricing with functional long-haul services to make transatlantic traveling a little more affordable for the budget globetrotters.
Although there are compelling bargains on offer among the low-cost airlines, travellers must have a grasp of how these airlines work. Many low-cost carriers unbundle services that full-service airlines provide in the price of the ticket, as well as in the way they are delivered. This means fees for everything from luggage to seat selection to in-flight snacks are typically tacked on afterwards. Having this information ahead of time to make enough comparisons accurately can keep travelers from getting any surprises up their sleeves.
For others, the convenience and savings are a fair trade-off. For many others, particularly those traveling with families or for business, full-service carriers may still provide better overall value. What is certain is that the global airline industry has thrown in with a two-tier system: one for price, and another for comfort.
No-frills carriers have ceased being alternatives, they are mass market characters in the airline game. From AirAsia’s dominance of the region to Allegiant’s rise in North America and Wizz Air’s growing alarm: the message is plain — flying has never been more widespread.
Backed by decades of government fare reports and independent global rankings, modern travelers today have more resources and options than travelers of the past to find flights that fit their budgets — while keeping the most essential elements of a safe and punctual journey.
