The South Central United States is set to experience a significant warm-up this week, with temperatures forecasted to climb 30-40 degrees Fahrenheit above the cooler conditions seen at the weekend’s start. This dramatic shift is attributed to a noticeable northward bulge in the jet stream, which will bring much-welcomed springlike warmth across Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Arkansas, according to AccuWeather meteorologists.

By midweek, residents in these states can expect daytime highs to reach the 70s and 80s Fahrenheit, a stark contrast to the 30s and 40s experienced just days prior. This surge in temperatures will be 10-20 degrees above the historical averages for mid-February, signaling an early taste of spring for the region.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Alex DaSilva highlights the extent of this temperature increase, noting, “Daytime temperatures across the south-central U.S. will rise anywhere between 30-45 degrees Fahrenheit from the start of the weekend to midweek.” For example, Dallas, which had a high of only 45 degrees Fahrenheit on Saturday, February 17, is forecast to see temperatures in the middle 70s to lower 80s by Wednesday, far exceeding its historical average of 62 degrees for this date.

The upcoming days will not only bring warmth but also dry conditions, thanks to a zone of high pressure promoting calm and mild weather, ideal for outdoor activities across the southern Plains. “High pressure over Texas will slowly slide off to the east over the Gulf Coast by midweek, allowing for a southerly flow to fill in across the region and enable warmer conditions,” DaSilva adds.

This unusual warmth may even challenge daily temperature records in Texas cities like Lubbock and Midland, with potential highs nearing records set nearly 30 years ago.

However, this warm spell is expected to moderate by the latter half of the week as the jet stream levels out, causing temperatures to drop 10-15 degrees from their midweek highs. While the northern areas of Texas and Oklahoma will see a quicker return to cooler temperatures, southern Texas cities like Houston and Brownsville will enjoy the higher temperatures a bit longer.

The forecast suggests a slight temperature increase again over the weekend across the Central states due to another high-pressure system, although the rise will be modest compared to the midweek highs.
