In Mazandaran, a region celebrated for its agricultural heritage, the recent surge in villa construction threatens the traditional agricultural landscape. However, local specialists advocate for a symbiotic relationship between medicinal plant production and agritourism, potentially heralding a new era of prosperity that could stimulate the local economy while protecting valuable agricultural land from being overtaken by development.

These experts are optimistic about the future, suggesting a series of strategic measures to enhance the cultivation of medicinal plants. By establishing esteemed processing and packaging facilities within the region, and intertwining medicinal plant tourism within the broader tourism industry, they envisage a thriving economic ecosystem that benefits both local farmers and visitors.

Particularly in Ramsar county, on the western side of Mazandaran, the cultivation of medicinal plants is recognized globally for its unique therapeutic properties. The region is home to a diverse range of medicinal flora, including the well-known Gol-e Gavzaban (borage), and burgeoning saffron and rose gardens, offering vast prospects for economic enhancement and sustainable progress.

Reports indicate that the export of essential oils and plant extracts from the country generates an impressive annual revenue of eight million dollars. By adopting innovative agricultural techniques, building partnerships between agricultural and tourism sectors, and leveraging the natural beauty of Mazandaran, the region could become a pioneer in sustainable agritourism.

The UN Tourism Organization (formerly UNWTO) highlights rural tourism as an activity associated with nature-based experiences, agriculture, rural lifestyle, and culture, among others. This form of tourism is characteristic of areas with low population density, agricultural and forestry landscapes, and traditional social structures.

The organization is focused on promoting the distinctiveness of each village to utilise tourism as a tool for development in rural settings. UNWTO Secretary-General Zurab Pololikashvili emphasizes the goal of acknowledging each village’s uniqueness and showcasing exemplary initiatives that utilise tourism as a catalyst for a brighter future in rural areas. This approach ensures that as tourism restarts, efforts are made to include every community and village, aiming for inclusive growth and development.
