Air New Zealand is reaffirming its commitment to connecting New Zealanders with one another and the world by announcing significant increases in capacity on its domestic routes. Starting in March 2026 and continuing through October of the same year, the airline will boost its services on some of the busiest domestic routes, ensuring that the needs of both leisure and business travelers are met. This move is part of the airline’s broader strategy to support regional growth, enhance business connectivity, and bolster tourism in New Zealand.
A Focus on Customer Connectivity
According to Air New Zealand General Manager Short Haul and Domestic, Lucy Hall, the airline is dedicated to ensuring that its domestic network is well-aligned with the evolving needs of its customers. Hall emphasized that the airline constantly reviews its routes and schedules to make sure that travelers have the best possible options when flying within New Zealand.
“We are constantly reviewing our network to make sure we are offering the best possible schedule and capacity for Kiwi customers,” Hall remarked. “These updates are all about keeping New Zealanders connected, supporting regional growth, and making it easier for people to travel for work, to visit loved ones, or to explore more of Aotearoa.”

Strengthening Domestic Connections
The upcoming increases in capacity will primarily affect the airline’s most popular domestic routes, all of which are crucial for New Zealand’s economy. By enhancing the frequency and availability of flights, Air New Zealand aims to make travel more convenient and affordable for its passengers, whether for business, tourism, or personal reasons.

One of the most notable increases will be on the Auckland–Queenstown route, which will experience a 9% growth in capacity. This significant expansion will add around 50,000 extra seats throughout the year, reflecting the high demand for travel to Queenstown, a renowned tourism hotspot. This will provide customers with more flexibility and options when traveling to one of New Zealand’s most sought-after destinations.
In addition, other domestic routes will also see substantial boosts in capacity. The Auckland–Christchurch route will grow by 4%, while the Auckland–Rotorua route will be increased by 7%. Other routes experiencing increases include Auckland–Blenheim, which will see a 7% increase, and the Christchurch–Hamilton route, which will receive a 17%boost.
Supporting Regional Growth and Business Connectivity
Air New Zealand’s plans also include enhancing regional connectivity, particularly between Christchurch and other cities. Christchurch, which is a major hub in the South Island, will see around 25,000 additional seats available compared to the same period in the previous year. These changes aim to make it easier for both business and leisure travelers to access Christchurch and its surrounding regions.
One of the major updates is the introduction of daily jet services on the Christchurch–Hamilton route starting February 2026. This service, which will increase capacity by 17%, aims to improve connectivity between these two cities, providing an easier and faster option for travelers between the North and South Islands. Additionally, Air New Zealand plans to increase the number of flights from Christchurch to other cities like Napier, Nelson, Rotorua, Tauranga, and Invercargill, making it easier for passengers to fly in and out of Christchurch with more options.
Improved Services for Business Travelers
Air New Zealand is particularly focusing on improving the business travel experience, particularly for routes that are important for day-to-day business operations. The Auckland–Rotorua route, for example, will see its capacity increased by 7% and will be upgraded to an ATR aircraft. The new timetable will offer flights at more convenient times for business travelers, allowing for smoother travel for those who need to attend meetings or conferences and return home the same day.
New departures have been scheduled to suit the needs of business customers. A 6:50 am departure from Rotorua to Auckland and a 6:20 pm return flight from Auckland to Rotorua will enable travelers to complete a full day’s work in Auckland and return home in the evening, a much-requested change from the Rotorua community.
In addition, Air New Zealand is introducing a new Wellington–Rotorua schedule that will offer flights in the morning and afternoon, catering to both business travelers and those wishing to travel for leisure. The Christchurch–Rotoruaroute will also see capacity increased by 4%, giving customers even more options when traveling between these two locations.
“We heard from the Rotorua community that better flight times for business travel were a priority, so we’re adjusting the schedule to meet that request,” said Hall. “These changes will make it easier for locals to travel to Auckland for a full day’s work and return home the same evening.”
Supporting New Zealand’s Economy and Communities
These schedule and capacity changes reflect Air New Zealand’s ongoing commitment to not only meeting the needs of its customers but also supporting the broader economy and regional communities. By increasing the number of available seats, Air New Zealand is helping to drive tourism, support local businesses, and improve overall connectivity across New Zealand.
Hall further highlighted that these adjustments form part of the airline’s broader strategy to ensure that New Zealand remains well-connected both domestically and internationally. “This growth will help stimulate regional economies, provide more choice for customers, and support the continued recovery of New Zealand’s tourism sector,” she added.
Conclusion
With these changes, Air New Zealand is solidifying its position as a key player in the country’s domestic air travel sector. By expanding services, improving flight schedules, and offering more options for both business and leisure travelers, the airline is contributing to New Zealand’s ongoing growth and prosperity. Whether it’s making it easier for people to visit family and friends, travel for work, or explore the stunning landscapes of Aotearoa, Air New Zealand is committed to connecting the people of New Zealand in the most effective and efficient way possible.
