An announcement from Thiruvananthapuram International Airport has revealed that AirAsia Berhad is set to introduce a direct flight service to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s capital, starting February 21. The airline plans to utilize an Airbus 320, equipped with 180 passenger seats, for the new Thiruvananthapuram-Kuala Lumpur route. Scheduled to arrive at 11:50 PM and depart at 12:25 AM, the service will initially operate on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays directly from Thiruvananthapuram.

The airport’s statement further disclosed that this inaugural service by Air Asia from Thiruvananthapuram is anticipated to enhance connectivity not only to Kuala Lumpur but also to other countries such as Australia, Thailand, Indonesia, and Singapore, among others. This development is seen as a response to the longstanding demands from IT companies for better connectivity to East Asian countries, with the potential to significantly boost the travel and tourism sectors in Kerala and southern Tamil Nadu.

In related developments, Airbus, in partnership with the Tata group-owned Air India, has recently established a pilot training facility in Gurugram, Haryana, as part of a 50:50 joint venture. Furthermore, Airbus has teamed up with GMR Aero Technic to offer aircraft maintenance engineering training courses in Hyderabad.

The Tata Airbus training centre, spanning 3,300 square metres, is set to feature 10 full flight simulators, classrooms, and briefing facilities, with plans to start operations in early 2025 with four A320 simulators. Over the next decade, the centre aims to train approximately 5,000 new pilots for the A320 and A350, with course offerings accredited by both the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) and the Indian DGCA.

Additionally, Airbus’s collaboration with GMR Aero Technic includes supplying training materials and ongoing evaluations of the training centre, alongside training for GMR instructors. This comprehensive approach underscores Airbus’s commitment to supporting aviation training and development in the region.
