Malaysian low-cost carrier AirAsia X (AAX) is making bold moves into Europe. From 2026, the airline plans to launch new long-haul routes to several European cities.
This marks a major shift — not just for AirAsia, but for budget travel between Asia and Europe.

AirAsia X’s first step is clear: leveraging Istanbul (Türkiye) as a gateway. The airline started its maiden flight to Istanbul on November 14, 2025, offering four weekly flights from Kuala Lumpur.
According to AAX CEO Benyamin Ismail, Istanbul could become more than just a stopover. The airline is evaluating the creation of a hub there, or even partnering with a local carrier.

For travelers, this means new low-cost options for connecting Europe and Asia — especially if one-stop flights via Istanbul become common.
While AirAsia X hasn’t publicly confirmed all the cities yet, it’s exploring key European destinations. According to its CEO, routes from Istanbul to London, Edinburgh, and Paris are on the table.

This could open up very attractive budget‑friendly options for Asia‑based travelers wanting to explore Western Europe.
But AAX’s ambitions don’t end at Europe. The airline plans a hub in Central Asia, possibly in Kazakhstan (Almaty) or Uzbekistan (Tashkent), adding to its growing long-haul network.
It’s also exploring a Gulf hub, potentially in Bahrain, which would enable one-stop connectivity from Asia to Europe via the Middle East.
This network strategy could significantly benefit travelers looking for multi-leg, low-cost journeys across continents.
To make these long-range routes viable, AirAsia X is expanding its fleet. The airline expects delivery of A321LR (Long Range) jets in the second half of 2026.
These aircraft are ideal for 5–7 hour flights. Once in operation, they will allow AAX to serve secondary European cities, making travel more affordable.
AirAsia X’s planned Europe expansion is a game-changer for budget travelers. With new long-haul routes, a prospective hub in Istanbul, and long-range aircraft on the way, the airline is building a bridge between Asia, Central Asia, the Gulf, and Europe.
For global tourists — especially from Asia — this offers a fresh and affordable way to explore Europe. As AAX ramps up, keep your travel radar on: low-cost, multi-leg adventures might just become your next big trip.
