The long-awaited Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) ruling is now in effect, dramatically reshaping the world of recreational flying. The initial phase of the Modernization of Special Airworthiness Certification (MOSAIC) rule has been finalized, meaning a massive Sport Pilot Expansion has arrived. These limitations restricted aircraft to a maximum of two seats and an unvarying maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 1,320 pounds (1,420 pounds for seaplanes). For two decades, these constraints were widely criticized by the General Aviation (GA) community as unduly restrictive.

Under the new standards, sport pilots are now permitted to operate aircraft that exhibit a clean stall speed of up to 59 knots calibrated airspeed. Furthermore, the authorized seating capacity for eligible aircraft has been increased to four seats, although sport pilots remain restricted to carrying only one passenger.
