The South-End Passenger Services Evaluation by the Alaska Railroad Corporation (ARRC) was a thorough review focused on improving the passenger train operations between Anchorage and Seward, as well as Whittier. This initiative was driven by the anticipation of increased activity from May through September, the busiest months, and the expected growth from new projects like the planned replacement of the Seward Cruise Dock and Passenger Terminal. The evaluation covered a range of areas, including examining the train schedules and travel patterns, optimizing the use of assets and managing revenues, identifying infrastructure enhancements for supporting growth and ensuring schedule reliability, and upgrading technology for check-ins and baggage processing at stations.
The team from Global Voyages Group included Joseph Slattery, an expert with extensive experience in the global cruise industry and a deep understanding of Alaska’s cruise and tourism sectors, alongside Nicholas Giersdorf, who specializes in data and marketing technology.
The evaluation unfolded in three stages. The first stage gathered insights through analysis of operational data, interviews with stakeholders, and discussions with ARRC leadership to cover all areas mentioned in the project guidelines. The second stage involved visiting sites and engaging in further discussions with ARRC personnel and local leaders in Whittier and Seward to gain a full understanding of the present conditions and future requirements. The final stage focused on developing and finalizing recommendations that aligned with the project’s objectives, incorporating feedback from the ARRC team, and identifying how these recommendations could be integrated with ARRC’s 10-Year Fleet Management Plan.
