Aleko in Bulgaria Tops List of Europe Best Ski Resorts for Winter Getaways

Recent research has unveiled the top ski destinations in Europe for this winter season, with Aleko in Vitosha, Bulgaria, emerging as the premier choice for vacationers. This study, conducted by SportsCover Direct, a company specializing in winter sports insurance, evaluated resorts based on eight criteria from skiresort.info. These included the cost of a one-day ski pass, the average hotel star rating, the number of ski lifts, the maximum altitude, the length of slopes, the median hotel price, and the quantity of hotels within a 10-kilometer radius.

The evaluation process gave different weights to each metric, prioritizing hotel pricing and star ratings. Each resort received a score out of 80, with an average score of 52.9. Aleko Resort in Vitosha, Bulgaria, stood out as the top choice for ski enthusiasts, scoring 74.2 out of 80. Its advantages include 197 nearby hotels, a 740-meter elevation difference, and an affordable average price of €26 (£22) for an adult day ski pass.

Straja Resort in Hunedoara County, Romania, came in second with a score of 72, offering similar day pass prices and a 738-meter elevation difference. It is notably favored by intermediate skiers.

Third place went to Ravna Planina in Bosnia and Herzegovina, with a score of 71.8. This location is particularly suitable for beginners, offering an easy slope rating of 86% and a low-cost day pass.

Tornik – Zlatibor in Serbia ranked fourth, scoring 71.5 out of 80. It boasts an affordable average weekly stay price, with 45 hotels in proximity and a mix of easy and intermediate slopes.

The fifth spot was claimed by Montenegro’s Kolašin 1450 and 1600 resorts, achieving a score of 70.1 due to their seven ski lifts and reasonable hotel and day pass prices.

Bulgaria’s Bansko resort took the sixth position, with a 69.8 score, appealing especially to beginners and enjoying a high average star rating.

Malo Igman in Bosnia and Herzegovina secured the seventh place with a score of 68.9, offering affordable ski passes and a 50% intermediate slope rating.

Eighth place was awarded to Céüze 2000 in Gap, France, with a score of 68.1, making it an ideal choice for family skiing trips due to its hotel prices and lift pass costs.

North Macedonia’s Mavrovo – Zare Lazareski resort was ninth with a score of 67.7, appealing to skiers of intermediate skill levels with its 623m elevation range.
