Alstom, a global leader in sustainable and intelligent mobility solutions, has secured a contract to supply Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP with 103 state-of-the-art MF19 trainsets, representing the latest in metro rail technology. Valued at over €800 million, the entire investment is backed by Île-de-France Mobilités. Commencing in 2027, this fresh fleet will systematically supplant the current rolling stock operating on lines 13, 12, and 8 of the Île-de-France metro.

This procurement is part of a larger agreement inked in December 2019 between RATP (representing Île-de-France Mobilités) and Alstom, which allows for the delivery of up to 410 MF19 trainsets. Ultimately, the MF19 series will serve 8 lines of the Île-de-France metro, including lines 3, 3bis, 7, 7bis, 8, 10, 12, and 13.

Initially, 44 trainsets were ordered in 2019, slated for deployment on lines 10, 7bis, and 3bis from 2025 onward. With this recent order, the total number of MF19 metros stands at 147, reflecting the continued trust of Île-de-France Mobilités and RATP in this modern rolling stock.

The additional 103 trainsets, configured as 5-car trains, will specifically rejuvenate lines 13, 12, and 8, with a breakdown of 67 for line 13, 22 for line 12, and 14 for line 8. All of these trainsets will feature a driver’s cab and possess the flexibility to transition into automatic metros should the lines undergo automation.

Designed to prioritize passenger comfort, safety, and environmental sustainability, each train will boast an open circulation layout (“boa” configuration), optimized passenger flow interiors, modern information systems, expansive windows, and energy-efficient LED lighting. Moreover, passengers will benefit from ergonomic seating, climate control, reduced noise levels, and USB charging ports.

Incorporating comprehensive video surveillance and cybersecurity measures, the MF19 trains will significantly enhance passenger safety throughout their operation.

Environmentally conscious design features, including the use of 20% recycled materials and energy-saving technologies such as 100% electric braking, contribute to a 20% reduction in energy consumption compared to current metro trains. Furthermore, these trains are engineered to achieve a remarkable 98% recyclability rate at the end of their lifecycle, further underscoring their commitment to sustainability.

Progress on MF19 Production

Alstom has commenced production of the MF19 metro trains at its facilities in Crespin and Valenciennes-Petite Forêt, located in Hauts-de-France. The initial vehicles have been successfully manufactured, with the first trainset assembled and poised to undergo testing.

The MF19 metro, a product of French design and assembly, sees involvement from eight out of Alstom’s 16 sites in France:

– Valenciennes-Petite Forêt and Crespin oversee studies, design, trainset assembly, testing/validation, and homologation.
– Crespin and Le Creusot handle bogie production.
– Ornans specializes in motor production.
– Tarbes is responsible for powertrain equipment.
– Toulouse focuses on electrical harness development.
– Villeurbanne manages on-board electronics.
– Aix-en-Provence addresses IT security concerns.

In total, approximately 2,300 Alstom employees, including 700 engineers, are dedicated to the project, ensuring its success and timely delivery.
