American Airlines has achieved a significant milestone by earning a spot on the prestigious Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for the first time, making it one of just two passenger airlines to be featured on this index. Additionally, American Airlines has secured its position on the Dow Jones Sustainability North America Index (DJSI North America) for the third consecutive year.

The DJSI World Index consists of renowned global sustainability leaders that have been identified by S&P Global through a rigorous Corporate Sustainability Assessment. This index represents the upper echelon, comprising the top 10% of the largest 2,500 companies listed in the S&P Global Broad Market Index, all selected based on their commendable long-term economic, environmental, and social performance.

Robert Isom, the CEO of American Airlines, expressed his satisfaction with this achievement, saying, “Inclusion on the DJSI World Index recognizes our efforts to enhance the reliability of our operations, invest in our dedicated team members, and commit to more sustainable practices. We are deeply honored to be acknowledged for our continued progress.”

Key Highlights of American Airlines’ Achievements:

  1. Industry-Leading Operational Reliability: American Airlines has maintained its position as the leader in on-time departures throughout the year. Furthermore, it outperforms its major U.S. network competitors in terms of completion factor. Customer satisfaction, measured by the Likelihood to Recommend (LTR) score, reached an all-time high in 2022 based on a substantial sampling of approximately 3 million customer surveys.
  2. Investing in Team Members: In 2023, American Airlines successfully negotiated a four-year agreement with its pilots, who are represented by the Allied Pilots Association (APA). This agreement will result in over $9 billion in compensation and quality-of-life benefits for American’s 15,000 pilots. Additionally, American received a perfect score of 100 on the Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s 2023-2024 Corporate Equality Index, a benchmarking survey assessing corporate policies and practices related to LGBTQ+ workplace equality.
  3. Enhancing Sustainability Efforts: American Airlines has taken the lead in the industry by establishing the first 2035 carbon intensity target, a target that has been validated by the Science Based Targets initiative. More recently, American entered into an innovative agreement to source advanced sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) from Texas-based Infinium. This agreement plays a crucial role in supporting Infinium’s efforts to produce SAF from waste carbon dioxide and renewable power sources. American Airlines has also become the inaugural customer of Graphyte, a carbon removal startup backed by Breakthrough Energy Ventures. Graphyte employs a novel, energy-efficient method for permanent carbon removal at a significantly lower cost compared to existing approaches.

American Airlines’ 2022 Sustainability Report provides detailed updates on the company’s strategy and progress over the past year. The report underscores American’s unwavering commitment to addressing critical sustainability issues, including climate change, customer and team member safety, professional development for team members, and exceptional customer service.
