American Airlines excels in winter holiday travel Performance

During the winter holiday travel season, American Airlines showcased exceptional operational efficiency by minimizing flight cancellations among major carriers and significantly enhancing on-time flight performance compared to the previous year. Despite challenging weather conditions across various regions and an influx of non-scheduled air operations, resulting in heightened air traffic control delays, American Airlines managed to deliver a commendable performance.

“When customers purchase tickets on American, they place their trust in us to deliver a safe and reliable operation, and I’m proud to say that thanks to the hard work of our team members, we delivered on that commitment — despite holiday headwinds, including some challenging weather and increased air traffic control congestion,” said David Seymour, American’s Chief Operating Officer. “We appreciate our federal partners — the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) — for their critical roles in making this holiday travel period a success.”

Key operational achievements during the winter holidays for American Airlines (through Jan. 1) include:

• Serving nearly 7.8 million customers through over 71,000 flights since Dec. 20, with the period concluding on Jan. 8.
• Leading major competitors in the completion factor, resulting in the fewest flight cancellations. Notably, American operated without canceling any mainline flights for the initial six days of the travel period (with a total of nine days without any mainline cancellations), with only 16 mainline flight cancellations during the entire holiday period.
• Demonstrating a 15% improvement in both on-time departure and arrival performance compared to the 2022 holiday period.
• Showing significant progress in baggage handling across their network, with a 66% improvement in the key metric measuring mishandled baggage compared to the previous year’s holiday period, attributing this success to their ongoing investments and focus in this area.
