On October 12th and 13th, the Oregon Coast Visitors Association will be arranging its annual People’s Coast Summit in Coos Bay. It would start with a traditional Salmon Bake dinner at the Mill Casino on October 11th. In 2020, the conference was scheduled to be organized in Coos Bay but was called off because of the pandemic. After 18 months of pivoting, being flexible and adapting to new norms, the OCVA team and Coos Bay – North Bend Visitor & Convention Bureau are quite sure that they can bring the summit back in person and it’ll be better than before.

If we look at this year’s summit, it has a promising line up of keynote speakers who would be providing big-picture thinking. The topics that the tourism stakeholders have to deal with will be from all over the coast. Questions like how can technologies help our hospitality workforce? Where do youth, especially those at risk of being homeless fit into our industry? Are sea otters the intersection of natural ecosystems, tourism and indigenous communities and something like that?

This year, live stream event would be the recent addition, which will take place from the Egyptian Theatre in downtown Coos Bay. This event is referred to as a “Tourism and Climate Action Watch Party” is hosted by Tourism Declares, The Travel Foundation, Travel Oregon and OCVA. Virtually in-person attendees will take part by fellow destinations and tourism professionals. This pivotal conversation about tourism and climate action takes place one month before the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP 26, in Glasgow, Scotland.
