The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) disclosed the release of a Gaps Progress Report. This report tracks the strides made in the past nine months by various standards developing organizations (SDOs) and stakeholders to address the gaps identified in the Standardization Roadmap for Unmanned Aircraft Systems (Version 2.0, June 2020), issued by the ANSI Unmanned Aircraft Systems Standardization Collaborative (UASSC). The roadmap pinpointed 71 open gaps where no existing standard or specification meets specific industry requirements, along with 53 gaps necessitating further pre-standardization research and development (R&D).

The report on progress in addressing gaps, put together by ANSI personnel, incorporates input from standards developing organizations (SDOs), subject matter experts, alert systems, and independent research. It delineates recently published standards and ongoing standards projects, accompanied by recommendations for potential modifications to the roadmap. While not a consensus document, the report serves as a dynamic “living document,” subject to regular updates until the UASSC releases the next version of the standardization roadmap.

Established in 2017, the UASSC’s mission is to coordinate and expedite the development of standards and associated conformity assessment programs crucial for the safe integration of unmanned aircraft systems (UAS) within the airspace of the United States.Over 400 individuals from 250 public and private sector entities contributed to the standardization roadmap, including representatives from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), other U.S. federal government agencies, SDOs, industry stakeholders, and academia.
