The 10th edition of the prestigious Leyla Gencer Voice Competition, a collaboration between the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV), Borusan Sanat, and Accademia Teatro alla Scala, is set to take place in Istanbul from September 22 to 27, 2024. Celebrating the legacy of the renowned ‘La Diva Turca’ Leyla Gencer, the competition resumes in 2024 after a hiatus due to global health concerns.

Open to vocalists aged 18 to 32 across all vocal categories, the competition is now accepting applications until May 3, 2024. Preliminary live auditions are scheduled for May and June, with options for candidates to audition in person or submit their performances online.

The jury for this 10th edition, led by Stéphane Lissner, comprises a panel of notable figures from various sectors of the industry. Jury members include Viviana Barrios from Deutsche Oper Berlin, Alessandro Galoppini of Teatro alla Scala, David Gowland of the Royal Opera House Jette Parker Young Artists Programme, Badri Maisuradze from the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre, and Carlo Tenan of the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra.

This year’s preliminary rounds will be held in prominent cities like London, Berlin, Milan, Naples, Tbilisi, and Istanbul. Online submissions for auditions are also welcomed. The results from these rounds will be announced on July 1, with the finals set in Istanbul later in September.

Prizes for the competition include €7,500 for the first-place winner, €4,000 for second place, and €1,500 for third. Additionally, there is a Leyla Gencer Audience Award of €1,500, decided by the audience vote. Unique opportunities such as a three-month scholarship at the Accademia Teatro alla Scala, performance with the Borusan Istanbul Philharmonic Orchestra, coaching at the Royal Opera House, and roles in productions at Deutsche Oper Berlin and the Tbilisi Opera and Ballet State Theatre are also part of the awards.
