Arrecife Promotes Lanzarote as a Premier Cruise Hub at Europe’s Largest Cruise Fair in Germany, Positioning Spain as a Key Cruise Destination

Published on September 12, 2025

One of the most beautiful places in the Canary Islands, Lanzarote, has recently made great progress toward becoming a major centre for the expanding cruise tourism industry. The capital of the island, Arrecife, demonstrated its potential as a major home port for the cruise industry at the Seatrade Europe fair, which is held in Hamburg every year. Considered Europe’s largest cruise fair, this event served as the platform for Arrecife’s marketing campaigns aimed at enhancing Lanzarote’s standing as a crucial port of call for luxury and transatlantic cruises.

Arrecife’s Strategic Move in the Cruise Industry

In an effort to expand Lanzarote’s appeal, Arrecife’s tourism representatives participated in various discussions with key players in the cruise industry. Leading the city’s delegation, officials emphasised the strategic advantages that Lanzarote can offer to the cruise sector. Arrecife aims to position itself as a prime departure point for major cruise brands, including renowned names such as AIDA, Costa, and P&O Cruises.

Arrecife’s modern infrastructure, including its two well-established cruise terminals – Los Mármoles and Naos – both managed by Global Ports, were central points of discussion. These terminals are among the most advanced in the Canary Islands and are well-equipped to handle the increasing number of cruise passengers. The city is seeking to leverage these facilities to attract more cruise operators, who are continually on the lookout for efficient, attractive, and easily accessible ports of call.

A Boost in Cruise Traffic: Arrecife’s Long-Term Plan

Looking ahead, Arrecife has set ambitious targets for the coming years. Over the next decade, the island aims to substantially increase the number of cruise ship stopovers, with expectations to reach 352 visits by May 2026. This represents an 18% rise compared to the previous season, underscoring the growing interest in Lanzarote as a cruise destination. The city is poised to welcome an increasing number of passengers, positioning itself as a significant player in the European cruise market.

This growing trend is expected to be particularly evident in the upcoming autumn and winter cruise season, which will begin in mid-September. The British cruise ship Ventura is set to be one of the first to dock in Arrecife, bringing with it over 2,000 passengers from southern England. The island’s favourable location, accessibility, and rich cultural and natural attractions make it a highly appealing choice for passengers looking for an unforgettable cruise experience.

Lanzarote’s Unmatched Cruise Attractions

Lanzarote is not only known for its stunning beaches but also for its unique volcanic landscapes and year-round pleasant climate. The island’s UNESCO Biosphere Reserve status has further amplified its appeal to environmentally conscious travellers. With a rich history, diverse culture, and fascinating architecture, Lanzarote offers a range of activities that make it an unforgettable destination for cruise passengers.

Among the key attractions for cruise tourists are Lanzarote’s famous Timanfaya National Park, home to volcanic craters, geysers, and an otherworldly landscape. Additionally, the César Manrique Foundation, dedicated to the island’s most famous artist, offers a glimpse into the integration of natural and architectural beauty. The island also boasts a range of picturesque villages, charming beaches, and excellent local gastronomy that offer visitors the chance to experience Lanzarote’s unique charm.

Arrecife itself, with its vibrant harbour, lively promenades, and historical landmarks, provides cruise tourists with an easy access point to explore the island’s offerings. As cruise traffic increases, Arrecife expects to see a boost in its local economy, particularly in sectors such as hospitality, retail, and transportation.

Arrecife’s Commitment to Sustainable Tourism

In addition to its focus on growing the cruise sector, the city of Arrecife is dedicated to fostering sustainable tourism. Given the increasing pressures of mass tourism on local ecosystems, Arrecife is actively working to implement practices that minimise environmental impact. The city’s tourism officials have expressed their commitment to developing Lanzarote as a sustainable cruise destination, ensuring that growth in the industry aligns with the island’s environmental and cultural preservation goals.

Through collaboration with cruise companies, local businesses, and environmental organisations, the aim is to create a model for responsible tourism. This includes promoting eco-friendly shore excursions, increasing awareness of sustainable practices among tourists, and implementing waste-reduction initiatives across the island’s port facilities.

Future of Arrecife and Lanzarote as a Cruise Hub

It is anticipated that Arrecife’s infrastructure investments and strategic partnerships with cruise lines will eventually pay off as the city aims to become one of Europe’s top cruise hubs. Arrecife appears destined to grow in importance as a major player in the global cruise industry with plans to modernise and expand its ports and Lanzarote’s ongoing ascent as a destination for leisure, culture, and nature.

Arrecife’s initiatives are positioned to strengthen Lanzarote’s standing as one of Europe’s top travel destinations as well as the city’s tourism economy by drawing in a wider variety of cruise ships and providing passengers with a more varied and enriching experience.
