As the festive seasons of Holi and Easter approach, a notable transformation in travel tendencies among Indian tourists is emerging, with a strong inclination towards diverse and enriching travel experiences. This trend is vividly captured in the recent search data released by Airbnb, which showcases a significant pivot in the destination choices of Indian travellers, ranging from the serene beaches of South Goa to the historic allure of European cities such as Athens and Istanbul.

Within India, South Goa has risen to prominence as the most sought-after beach destination, witnessing an impressive 330% surge in search inquiries for the forthcoming long weekend. This spike not only underscores South Goa’s magnetic appeal but also indicates a broadening of travel interests among Indians. Alongside, the cultural magnetism of cities like Varanasi, Jaipur, and Pondicherry, as well as the natural beauty of hill stations such as Mussoorie, Ooty, and Manali, are garnering increased attention for short escapes during the festive long weekend.

Internationally, Athens has captured the imaginations of Indian explorers with a remarkable 400% increase in search volume, placing it at the zenith of international travel desires, closely trailed by Istanbul, Bangkok, and Rome. These cities, with their rich tapestry of history and vibrant culture, are striking a chord with Indian travellers, reflecting a deep-seated desire for immersive cultural experiences.

The trend towards seeking accommodations with beachfronts, exceptional views, and luxurious pools is gaining momentum, indicative of a collective quest for scenic splendor and relaxation. This inclination is further evidenced by a 70% uptick in bookings for destinations outside urban centers, alongside a notable 20% rise in searches for family-oriented stays. These trends highlight a shift towards valuing tranquility and shared experiences in travel.

Amanpreet Bajaj, General Manager at Airbnb India, Southeast Asia, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, comments on this shift, stating, “Indian travellers are increasingly seeking unique and memorable experiences, moving beyond traditional holiday seasons to embrace every opportunity for exploration.” He further adds that Airbnb is leading this transformation by offering a plethora of diverse and enriching travel options that resonate with the evolving preferences of Indian tourists.

This dynamic shift in travel preferences among Indian travellers, as revealed by Airbnb’s latest search data, underscores a growing appetite for diversity in travel destinations and experiences. It highlights a movement away from conventional holiday choices towards a more varied and enriching approach to travel, catering to the desires for both relaxation and cultural immersion. As the travel industry continues to adapt, the preferences of Indian travellers are set to shape future trends in tourism, underlining the importance of variety and quality in travel experiences.
