According to recent data from FCM, the flagship large market corporate travel branch of Flight Centre Travel Group (ASX:FLT), business travel between Asia and Australia increased significantly in the third quarter of 2018 compared to the same period in 2022.

Between July 1st and September 30th, 2023, bookings from India to Australia experienced a remarkable increase of 21 percent compared to the same period in 2022. Moreover, bookings from various Asian countries, including China, Japan, Singapore, and Malaysia, soared by an impressive 83 percent, nearly doubling the demand for travel between these continents.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade of the Australian Government claims that the commercial interests are intimately intertwined. Australia’s two-way trade with ASEAN will surpass AU$178 billion in 2022, surpassing trade with Japan or the US.

Notably, India, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia all rank among Australia’s top 15 trading partners for the year 2022. In assessments of economic complementarity and growth prospects, it is evident that the most significant trade and economic opportunities for Australia in the next three decades are concentrated within the ASEAN region.

Gaurav Luthra, FCM Managing Director for India stated that over the last three months, there has been a robust resurgence in meetings, events, and conferences, as indicated by the notable increase in booking numbers. Businesses are now placing greater importance on face-to-face meetings, especially as the initial enthusiasm for virtual platforms like Zoom and Teams diminishes in favor of in-person gatherings. “Travel between our continent and Australia has always been critical for trade. Our latest innovative statistics show a demand for large businesses to head Down Under ramp up.”, says Guarav.

He further stated, “It’s no coincidence that the growth in the number of bookings coincides with airline capacity returning and more seats being offered. Singapore Airlines and Qantas have swapped out smaller aircraft for A380s to key cities such as Sydney and Melbourne.”
