OAG, the leading data platform for the global travel industry, has released its much-anticipated annual ranking of the world’s busiest airports for 2024. The report highlights significant trends in global air travel capacity, reflecting growth across key international and domestic hubs.

Atlanta Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL) retains its position as the world’s busiest airport, with an impressive capacity of 62.7 million seats. This marks a 2% increase from 2023, though the figures remain 1% below pre-pandemic levels in 2019. ATL continues to dominate both domestic and international travel markets.

Dubai International Airport (DXB) ranks as the second-busiest airport globally while maintaining its position as the leader in international capacity. The airport recorded a 7% year-on-year increase, reaching 6.2 million seats, underscoring its critical role as a global travel hub.

Tokyo Haneda Airport (HND) secures third place with 55.2 million seats, reflecting a 5% growth compared to 2023. It remains a key gateway to Asia, showcasing the region’s steady recovery in air travel.

London Heathrow Airport (LHR) ranks fourth globally and leads Europe with 51.5 million seats. It is closely followed by Istanbul Airport (IST) and Paris Charles de Gaulle (CDG) as Europe’s top contenders in the rankings.

In the United States, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport (DFW) and Denver International Airport (DEN) saw remarkable growth, increasing capacities by 18% and 24% respectively. These surges elevated them to fifth and sixth positions globally, signaling the resilience and expansion of the U.S. aviation sector.

China’s aviation market also demonstrated a robust rebound. Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport (CAN) and Shanghai Pudong International Airport (PVG) ranked seventh and ninth. PVG, in particular, emerged as the fastest-growing airport in the Top 10, with a striking 29% capacity increase that propelled it from 15th place in 2023 to its current position.

Rounding out the Top 10 is Istanbul Airport (IST), which climbed to eighth place. Its ascent underscores its growing prominence as a global hub, linking Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

The 2024 rankings illustrate a dynamic recovery in global air travel, with airports in North America, Asia, and Europe showing significant growth. These figures reflect not only a rebound from the challenges of recent years but also a reconfiguration of global travel networks, as capacity shifts to meet evolving passenger demands.

 OAG’s Chief Analyst, John Grant commented: “With growth across all regions of the world, the ten busiest airports once again reflect the strong recovery in the aviation sector in the last two years. From the successes in Dallas Ft Worth and Guangzhou to the more recent rapid recovery in capacity at Shanghai Pudong, airlines continue to power ahead with new routes and services despite the supply chain challenges of the post pandemic world.”
