On the afternoon of February 21, the Atomic Museum extends an invitation to its visitors for a captivating session titled “Tales from the Atomic Era: The Journey of Miss Atomic Bomb.” The museum’s co-founder, Robert Friedrichs, a historian by profession, will lead an engaging discussion on the iconic “Miss Atomic Bomb” photo, delving into its numerous adaptations and the role it played in the cultural history of Las Vegas.
This remarkable photograph, taken by the Las Vegas News Bureau, features Copa showgirl Lee A. Merlin in the desert, her arms joyfully raised towards the heavens, adorned with a radiant smile and a swimsuit designed to resemble a mushroom cloud. Those attending the event will uncover the secrets surrounding the individuals and events that culminated in the creation of “Miss Atomic Bomb” alongside other fascinating and thought-provoking images from the Atomic Era.
Rob McCoy, the Atomic Museum’s CEO, remarked, “The ‘Miss Atomic Bomb’ photo, having been featured in countless publications across the globe, stands out as one of the most iconic images of the Atomic Age.” He further noted, “Participants will be enthralled by the story behind this globally recognized photograph and its lasting influence on the city of Las Vegas.”
Scheduled to occur at 1 p.m. in the Rodgers Auditorium within the Atomic Museum, the event is open to museum members free of charge or with the price of admission to the museum. Additionally, students and educators can enjoy free entry to the event upon presenting a valid identification (note: this does not cover museum admission fees). As seating is limited, it will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
