Australia: Safety upgrade work starts on New England Highway, north of Bendemeer

The motorists will soon benefit from safer and smoother journeys with improvement work being carried out on the New England Highway near Bendemeer.

Member for Tamworth Kevin Anderson said work would be carried out about eight kilometres north on Bendemeer on the New England Highway, between Gunnalong and Rocky Gully roads.

“These safety upgrades are ensuring a smoother journey for motorists and by building the infrastructure that prevents crashes we are saving lives,” Mr Anderson said.

“Work will include vegetation control and drainage improvements to help better maintain the road along with the installation of new safety barriers.

“We’ll also see shoulder widening and wide centreline treatment, which increases the separation distance between oncoming vehicles, reducing the risk of head-on collisions.”

Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Sam Farraway said the $4.08 million upgrade came from the NSW Government’s Safer Roads Program.

“One life lost on our roads is one too many, which is why the NSW Government is working hard to improve safety for all road users,” Mr Farraway said.

“The New England Highway is an important link in our road network for residents, local industries and tourism, and this upgrade will ensure a safer drive for all road users.

“The NSW Liberals Nationals Government is securing a brighter future for NSW families by investing in the infrastructure that makes daily life easier and safer when travelling on our road network.”

Motorists are advised to drive to the conditions and follow the directions of signs and traffic control.

Traffic control, single lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40km/h will be in place during work hours, which may affect travel times. Works will be carried out from 6am to 6pm weekdays and Saturdays, weather permitting.
