Australia’s Cockle Train Transforms with Air-Conditioned Fleet for a Comfortable and Scenic Travel Experience

Published on December 6, 2025

Cockle Train, one of South Australia’s most beloved rail services, has undergone a major transformation with the launch of its newly refurbished, air-conditioned fleet. On November 27th, more than 100 special guests had the opportunity to experience the upgraded Tourist Train during its inaugural journey from the historic Goolwa Railway Station to Victor Harbor. This significant milestone signals the start of a new era for the Cockle Train, offering a refreshed and comfortable travel experience for both locals and tourists.

The journey toward this major upgrade has been years in the making. Originally built in Victoria, the H-Cars were upgraded with state government support before being placed in storage. It wasn’t until the dedicated SteamRanger volunteers in South Australia connected with their counterparts in Victoria that the project truly began to take shape. After 18 months of hard work, planning, and coordination, the team succeeded in bringing the refurbished H-Cars to life, although not without facing several challenges along the way.

The most significant hurdles were regulatory and bureaucratic. To bring the trains into South Australia, the team had to rewrite technical documentation, navigate complex legislation, and secure the necessary accreditations to ensure safe operation. Just as the project neared completion, an unfortunate act of vandalism delayed the launch by two months when parts of the newly refurbished fleet were damaged. However, despite these setbacks, the unwavering support from the Victorian Government and the tireless efforts of local volunteers ensured the project remained on course.

The result is a modern, state-of-the-art fleet designed for comfort and operational flexibility. Each H-Set consists of three cars, with a total seating capacity for around 180 passengers. The design also allows for expansion into six-car sets during peak demand, making it easy to accommodate larger groups or special events. The upgraded fleet also means the Cockle Train can now operate year-round, offering regular services during South Australia’s busiest tourist season. The full public service is set to begin in early 2026, just in time for the summer rush.

In addition to the expanded capacity, the new fleet is designed with comfort in mind. The H-Cars are fully air-conditioned, ensuring passengers remain comfortable even on the hottest summer days. The modernized fleet offers a sleek, updated interior, enhancing the overall travel experience while maintaining the nostalgic charm the Cockle Train is known for. Future upgrades are also in the works, including the addition of a buffet, bar, and lounge area, which will make the journey even more enjoyable.

The revamped Cockle Train will also sport a fresh new look. The original Victorian livery will be replaced with a design that reflects South Australia’s local heritage, giving the trains a more regional, contemporary feel. This updated look will further cement the Cockle Train’s status as one of South Australia’s premier tourism experiences.

The upgraded fleet offers much more than just modern comforts. It’s designed to make the Cockle Train more flexible, providing the capacity to operate year-round and accommodate an increasing number of passengers. Whether it’s families, tourists, or large groups, the new H-Cars are designed to meet the growing demand for scenic travel along South Australia’s stunning coastline.

Before the official public launch, a series of test runs will be conducted to ensure everything is operating smoothly. These test runs will take place on December 6th, 7th, 14th, and 17th, with three return departures daily from Goolwa to Victor Harbor at 10:00 AM, 12:15 PM, and 2:45 PM. Tickets for these test runs will be available for purchase on the day of travel at the Goolwa, Port Elliot, and Victor Harbor stations. Passengers boarding at Middleton will need to purchase their tickets at the destination station.

The Cockle Train has long been a favorite among locals and tourists, offering a leisurely and scenic way to explore the natural beauty of the Fleurieu Peninsula. With the launch of the new air-conditioned fleet, the service is set to become an even more popular attraction, offering improved comfort, increased capacity, and enhanced amenities. Whether you’re a local looking for a relaxing day trip or a visitor eager to experience the region’s stunning landscapes, the upgraded Cockle Train promises a more enjoyable and memorable journey.

The full public service is set to begin in early 2026, and with it, the Cockle Train will continue to be a cherished part of South Australia’s tourism landscape. With its modern fleet, expanded operations, and exciting future upgrades, the Cockle Train is ready to offer an unforgettable experience for years to come.
