Avelo Airlines, the startup ultra-low cost carrier that began flying from Southern California in April, is expanding to the East Coast.

Now, this start-up airline company, Avelo plans to launch flights from New Haven, Connecticut, to four Florida destinations in November ahead of the busy winter travel season.

The airline plans to offer nonstop service to Orlando, Fort Lauderdale, Tampa and Fort Myers using Boeing 737s.
Tweed-New Haven Airport currently only has one flight, an American Airlines flight to Philadelphia offered five times a week on a regional jet operated by American Eagle partner Republic Airways.

That service is ending September 30.

Avelo CEO Andrew Levy sees huge potential in the airport, whose website compares the costs of flying out of New Haven versus driving to bigger airports in the region, including New York’s LaGuardia and JFK and the Newark airport in New Jersey. The airline said it will be investing $1.2 million for airport improvements as part of a $100 million airport modernization project.

Avelo CEO Andrew Levy also said that Connecticut told them they want more convenient and affordable options for flying to Florida, and listened. These four sought-after, sun-soaked destinations are an ideal winter retreat, and the smooth small-airport experience that distinguishes (the airport) will ensure their customers depart relaxed and ready for some fun in the sun.

Avelo Airports likes small airports. The airline’s first base was Hollywood Burbank Airport in Southern California, billed as an alternative to the busy Los Angeles International Airport. Avelo has already canceled service to two of its initial markets, Mesa, Arizona, and Grand Junction, Colorado, and plans to end Bozeman, Montana, service on Sept. 15.
