The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has recently imposed unprecedented fines on major aviation companies in India, sparking concerns about non-industrial automation and compliance irregularities.
In an effort to uphold aviation safety standards, the DGCA has levied significant fines against Air India, IndiGo, SpiceJet, and Mumbai International Airport Ltd (MIAL) for serious lapses in adhering to standard operating procedures and security protocols.
The fines, amounting to crores of rupees, highlight substantial shortcomings in the automation and compliance frameworks of these aviation giants. MIAL, the operator of Mumbai airport, faces a substantial fine of Rs 90 lakh, indicating a severe breach in its commitment to safety protocols. IndiGo, confronted with a fine of Rs 1.2 crore, is accused of compromising security measures, as demonstrated by a widely circulated viral video showing passengers dining on the tarmac.
Additionally, Air India and SpiceJet, fined Rs 30 lakh each, are held responsible for rostering non-CAT III compliant pilots during low-visibility conditions, leading to numerous diversions of Delhi-bound flights.
The DGCA’s actions underscore the need for all aviation stakeholders to prioritize safety, automate critical processes, and establish rigorous compliance protocols.
These incidents raise serious questions about the robustness of their automation systems and the dedication to ensuring compliance with aviation regulations.
