Paris was placed firmly among the world’s most resilient urban tourism destinations during summer 2026, as 6.4 million tourists were welcomed across Greater Paris between July 1 and August 28. Despite repeated heatwaves and an uncertain international environment, demand was broadly maintained, with overall visitor numbers increasing 0.8% compared with the previous summer.

The United States retained its position as the French capital’s leading international market, while several other overseas markets registered substantial increases. At the same time, hotel performance was strengthened, major sporting and cultural events generated additional demand, and summer swimming opportunities along the Seine attracted hundreds of thousands of visitors.

According to the summer report from Paris je t’aime – Tourist Office, Paris tourism was supported by a combination of international demand, major events and seasonal attractions. The results also indicated that the effects of extreme temperatures were concentrated around individual heatwave periods rather than producing a prolonged downturn across the entire summer.

Of the 6.4 million visitors recorded across Greater Paris, 4.6 million were received in Paris proper. This represented 71.5% of all visitors during the period covered by the report.

United States Remains Paris Leading International Market

International tourism continued to provide a major foundation for Paris during the summer. The United States remained the leading international source market, although a modest year-on-year decline was recorded.

Between July 1 and August 23, approximately 400,000 air arrivals from the United States were recorded. This represented a 0.7% decrease compared with the same period last summer.

The limited decline contrasted with stronger growth from several other international markets. Poland recorded the largest increase among the markets highlighted in the report, while Portugal and Mexico also registered notable gains.

The growth figures were recorded as follows:

  • Poland: +38.5%
  • Portugal: +24%
  • Mexico: +12%

The performance demonstrated that international demand was not being driven by a single market alone. Although the United States remained the largest international contributor, diversification across European and long-haul markets continued to support overall visitor volumes.

Paris Hotels See Occupancy Climb

The resilience of Paris hotels was reflected in occupancy figures recorded throughout the summer. Hotel occupancy in Paris reached 80.9%, representing an increase of 1.2% compared with 2025.

The improvement was significant because the summer season was affected by unusually high temperatures and several periods of extreme heat. Nevertheless, accommodation demand remained sufficiently strong to produce a year-on-year increase.

Pierre Rabadan, President of Paris je t’aime – Tourist Office, highlighted the destination’s ability to maintain its appeal under difficult circumstances. The performance was attributed to the continued efforts of tourism operators and stakeholders across Paris and Greater Paris, alongside the quality of the visitor experience and the destination’s ability to accommodate tourism while respecting the daily life of local residents.

The figures therefore suggested that the capital’s tourism ecosystem remained relatively robust despite external pressures.

Record Temperatures Test Paris Tourism

Weather became one of the most significant challenges facing Paris during summer 2026. A total of 47 days recorded maximum temperatures above 30°C, surpassing the 39 days recorded in 1947.

The intensity of the heat had visible consequences for certain tourism activities and events. Solidays and the Marche des Fiertés were cancelled during the weekend of June 27 as extreme temperatures created difficult conditions.

The effects were also visible in daytime tourism. French tourists and day-trippers in Paris proper declined by 3%, while international tourists recorded a smaller decline of 0.7%.

However, the impact was not consistent throughout the entire summer. Different heatwave periods produced different results, indicating that visitor behaviour was closely connected to the severity and timing of individual weather events.

Between June 20 and June 28, overnight tourist presence increased 1.4% compared with 2025. By contrast, between July 7 and July 13, tourist presence declined 7.2%.

The sharper July decline indicated that extreme temperatures could influence travel behaviour, mobility patterns, stays and last-minute booking decisions. Nevertheless, the overall assessment from Paris je t’aime was that the disruption remained concentrated around the most severe periods rather than developing into a sustained seasonal decline.

Major Events Help Keep Visitor Demand Strong

Events played an important role in sustaining Paris tourism during the summer. Cultural, entertainment and sporting programmes provided additional reasons for visitors to travel to the capital, while also helping hotels and surrounding businesses benefit from increased demand.

The Fête de la Musique weekend was one notable example. Hotel occupancy increased 4.7% on Saturday, June 20, and 4% on Sunday, June 21.

A much larger tourism impact was associated with the Esport World Cup 2026. The event was held for the first time in Paris at Paris Expo Porte de Versailles – VIPARIS from July 6 to August 20.

The scale of the competition generated considerable visitor and audience engagement. A total of 175,000 tickets were sold, representing a 94% increase compared with 2025. Competition venues generated 2 million cumulative visits, while the event reached 850 million viewers.

A total of 440 million hours were watched, an increase of 26% compared with 2025. The League of Legends tournament alone reached a peak audience of 4.3 million viewers.

These figures demonstrated the increasingly important role of major international sporting and entertainment events in generating tourism activity beyond conventional sightseeing.

Porte de Versailles Benefits From Esports Tourism

The Esport World Cup 2026 generated a measurable effect on accommodation demand around Paris Expo Porte de Versailles.

Districts surrounding the venue recorded an average 2.9% increase in hotel occupancy compared with 2025. Hotel occupancy around the venue was also 3.7% higher than the overall rate recorded in Paris proper.

International visitor activity around the venue increased as well. Foreign tourists and day-trippers in the Porte de Versailles area rose 3.1%.

Some international markets experienced particularly strong increases:

  • Saudi Arabia: +97.3%
  • Netherlands: +38.5%
  • United Arab Emirates: +32%
  • Germany: +31.7%
  • Japan: +30%
  • United States: +11.7%

The figures highlighted how major events can reshape visitor flows within a city. Instead of demand being concentrated solely around traditional tourist districts, significant visitor activity was generated around the event venue and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Seine Swimming Becomes a Major Summer Attraction

Swimming in the Seine and Paris canals emerged as another major attraction during summer 2026. Designated swimming areas welcomed 216,000 swimmers between July 4 and August 30.

The total represented a 20% increase compared with 2025, indicating strong public and visitor interest in the seasonal facilities.

The popularity of swimming was particularly notable against the backdrop of the summer heat. As temperatures remained unusually high, access to designated swimming areas provided both a recreational opportunity and an alternative way for visitors to experience Paris.

Online interest also remained strong for several seasonal activities promoted through the Paris je t’aime website. Among the best-performing event and activity pages were information covering the Tour de France arrival, swimming in the Seine, open-air cinemas and the July 13 fireworks.

The strong digital interest suggested that visitors were actively seeking seasonal experiences alongside traditional attractions.

Autumn Events Could Strengthen Paris Demand

The outlook for the immediate autumn period is more mixed. Hotel occupancy is currently running 1% below 2025 levels for September.

A stronger performance is expected in October, however, with hotel occupancy forecast to increase 2% year over year.

Several major events are expected to contribute to autumn demand. These include Batimat, SIAL, Paris Games Week and NFL games at Stade de France.

The combination of trade exhibitions, entertainment events and international sport could provide additional support for hotels, restaurants, transport operators and other tourism businesses.

Such events are particularly important because they can generate visitor demand outside the traditional peak leisure periods, helping to balance fluctuations in seasonal travel.

Greater Paris Targets 40 Million Tourists in 2026

For the full year, Greater Paris could welcome 40 million tourists in 2026. The forecast would place annual visitor numbers broadly in line with 2025.

The projected result would represent a relatively stable performance for one of the world’s most visited urban destinations, particularly considering the challenges experienced during the summer.

Extreme heat created temporary disruption, while cancellations affected selected events. International uncertainty also presented a difficult backdrop for global travel. Yet the overall visitor count remained broadly stable, hotel occupancy improved, and major events continued to generate significant demand.

The continued strength of the United States market, combined with rapid growth from Poland, Portugal and Mexico, provided further evidence of a diversified international visitor base. At the same time, the Esport World Cup 2026 demonstrated the ability of large-scale events to attract visitors, increase hotel occupancy and expand tourism activity into specific districts.

With major autumn events still ahead, Greater Paris is positioned for another year of substantial tourism activity. The projected 40 million visitors would reinforce the capital’s position as a leading global destination while demonstrating that tourism demand can remain resilient even when extreme weather and wider international uncertainty create significant challenges.
