In what has been hailed as a major boost to Bahrain’s sports tourism sector, the Bahrain Tourism and Exhibitions Authority signed a joint framework agreement with the Rashid Equestrian and Horseracing Club to put Bahrain on the world sports tourism map through the highly successful horseracing events of the 2025–2026 racing season. The agreement aims at positioning Bahrain as the ultimate destination for both sports and tourists by combining entertainment, culture, and tourism into one lively and integrated experience.
The BTEA’s collaboration with the REHC aims to drive the Kingdom’s strategy of boosting sports tourism, which plays an essential role in Bahrain’s overall tourism development. The agreement will see both entities working closely to organize world-class horseracing events, showcasing Bahrain’s equestrian culture while offering visitors a unique and entertaining experience.

Majeed Mohammed Al Majid, Director of Business Development and Licensing at BTEA, emphasized that the partnership will contribute significantly to the tourism sector. Al Majid stressed that horseracing holds a key position within Bahrain’s tourism offerings, particularly given the Kingdom’s ongoing investment in the equestrian and horseracing industry’s infrastructure. These investments aim to improve not only the events themselves but also the overall tourism experience for visitors.
“The development of horseracing infrastructure and the quality of events are central to positioning Bahrain as a top-tier destination for international sports tourism,” Al Majid noted. The initiative aligns with Bahrain’s broader Tourism Sector Strategy for 2022–2026, which includes sports tourism as a key pillar to enhance the Kingdom’s global presence in the tourism industry.

Fatema Abdulwahab Al Balooshi, Director of Investment and Financial Sustainability at the REHC, emphasized the cultural significance of horseracing in Bahrain. This collaboration highlights the Kingdom’s efforts to preserve and promote the rich cultural heritage of horseracing, a sport that is deeply ingrained in the region’s history.
Al Balooshi also acknowledged the ongoing improvements made by the REHC, including the hosting of international championships and related events. These efforts have played a vital role in developing Bahrain’s reputation as a leading destination for sports tourism. “The progress we’ve made in hosting global championships, along with accompanying activities, helps solidify horseracing’s place as a key contributor to Bahrain’s tourism sector,” she said.

The partnership between BTEA and REHC supports the inclusion of horseracing in the tourism programs approved by the BTEA. This marks a strategic step toward ensuring that the sport remains a prominent feature of Bahrain’s tourism calendar. Furthermore, the collaboration is designed to provide an integrated tourism experience for visitors, offering a combination of sports, culture, entertainment, and leisure activities.
A core aspect of this partnership is the creation of a more holistic tourism experience that goes beyond just the races. The plan includes the organization of accompanying events and activities designed to enhance the entertainment and tourism offerings surrounding each horseracing event. These activities aim to attract diverse audience segments, including international visitors, families, and those interested in the cultural aspects of Bahrain’s equestrian traditions.
By combining horseracing with various entertainment options such as music performances, cultural exhibitions, and family-friendly activities, Bahrain hopes to appeal to a wide range of tourists, creating a comprehensive and engaging experience for visitors. This approach reflects the BTEA’s commitment to expanding Bahrain’s tourism appeal, tapping into different segments of the market, and offering visitors a variety of activities that go beyond traditional sightseeing.
Both BTEA and REHC recognize the importance of increasing public engagement and attendance at events. The framework agreement seeks to build on the strong turnout and enthusiasm for local and international horseracing events in Bahrain. The public’s passion for the sport has been evident during past races and championships, and this partnership aims to capitalize on that interest to further boost tourism.
Through increased promotion, strategic digital marketing campaigns, and collaboration with global tourism partners, the agreement will help raise awareness of Bahrain as a key destination for sports tourism. This will not only enhance the local economy but also increase Bahrain’s visibility on the global tourism map.
Sports tourism is a significant contributor to the economy of Bahrain, providing valuable opportunities for growth in related sectors such as hospitality, transportation, and retail. The influx of international tourists attending horseracing events and other sports competitions brings with it increased demand for accommodations, local services, and tourism-related experiences.
The joint framework aims to create new economic opportunities by attracting more visitors to the Kingdom during the racing season. This includes boosting local businesses, particularly those in hospitality and entertainment, while providing a platform for Bahrain’s tourism industry to expand its offerings.
As the Kingdom continues to enhance its infrastructure and attract more international events, sports tourism will undoubtedly play a crucial role in diversifying Bahrain’s tourism offerings, moving beyond traditional cultural and leisure tourism.
The collaboration between the BTEA and REHC marks the beginning of a long-term strategy to position Bahrain as a global leader in sports tourism. By leveraging its equestrian heritage, improving infrastructure, and organizing high-profile sporting events, Bahrain is set to further establish itself as an attractive destination for international travelers and sports enthusiasts alike.
In the coming years, Bahrain plans to continue its investment in sports tourism, not only through horseracing but also by exploring opportunities in other sports and entertainment sectors. The Kingdom’s focus on creating an integrated tourism experience that blends sports, culture, and entertainment will ensure its place on the global tourism map for years to come.
This Bahrain partnership between BTEA and REHC strengthens the Kingdom’s position further in the race to establish its name as a leading sports tourism destination in the global sports tourism arena. The aim is local and international visitor attraction through horseracing, infrastructure development, and an improved visitor experience. This ensures not only a sustainable economic gain but also the preservation of Bahrain’s rich cultural heritage.
