The reopening of Bali’s airport for international flights and thousands visiting for the G-20 summit and other connected proceedings have given rise to optimism for a stronger revival.

Over 1.5 million foreign tourists and 3.1 million domestic travelers came to Bali as of October this year.

Accepting more sustainable models of tourism, Bali has started a digital nomad visa program, known as the “second home visa” scheduled to come into effect in December. Bali is also among 20 destinations that Airbnb said that it is collaborating with for remote work, along with places in the Caribbean and the Canary Islands.

Bali has suffered a lot in the past. From time to time, the island’s magnificent volcanoes have become active, erupting or belching ash.

The suicide bombings in Bali’s beach town of Kuta killing 202 foreign tourists in 2002 remained for years, damaging tourism on the island, which is generally known for its peace and tranquility.

Recent incessant rains gave rise to floods and landslides in some areas, adding to the concerns for communities working to reconstruct their tourism businesses.
