Much like the Independence Day Celebration in America, Bastille Day — known in France as la Fête nationale — took place on July 14,1789, when French radicals stormed the Bastille, France’s most notorious political prison. This year the volunteers bearing the torch-lit lanterns marched to a band’s military tunes at the Promenade Beach on Wednesday to launch Bastille Day celebrations, symbolising the French Revolution’s rallying cry for liberty, equality and fraternity.
The “Marche aux flambeaux” featured volunteers from various Franco-Indian Associations, organisations of former French soldiers, youth and women’s organisations, the Union des Français de l’Etranger, or UFE, representing overseas French citizens and the Lycée Français International de Pondichery cricket club.
It was the starting point of the French Revolution and was made an official holiday in 1880. Since then, it has become an important French holiday. Luckily for Houston natives, it’s not necessary to travel to France to celebrate.
Disneyland Paris, one of the popular theme parks is bringing back the celebration of Bastille Day with a firework display set to take place on July 14, 2022. The new firework show will feature Disney films that take location in France. Both 2020 and 2021 Bastille Day fireworks were canceled in the park due to Covid-19 restrictions.
Bastille Day is celebrated in France every July 14 as the beginning of the French Revolution. The Bastille Day firework show will follow Disney Illuminations.
