In a groundbreaking move, the Nagaland Beekeeping and Honey Mission (NBHM) is set to unveil ‘Bee Tourism’ at this year’s Hornbill Festival from December 1-10 at Kisama Heritage Village.

Chairman Obed Quinker announced this eco-conscious venture during a press briefing at the Multi Utility Centre, Sovima. The initiative aims to spotlight Nagaland’s unique beekeeping traditions, offering travelers an immersive experience while raising awareness about the vital role of honeybees in biodiversity conservation and agriculture.

This year’s Bee Tourism will debut in Mima, a village renowned as the ‘honey village’ for its traditional underground beekeeping practices. The NBHM, in collaboration with local committees and the Nagaland Tourist Association, will launch ‘Bee and Honey Trails to Mima Village’ on November 29, officially opening the trails at the Honey Hub in Kisama.

The itinerary includes guided tours of Mima’s apiaries, a cultural walk, and a showcase of local products like textiles, handicrafts, and honey-based treats. ‘India Trail,’ an eco-tour agency, will lend its expertise to curate these enriching experiences.

At the Hornbill Festival, the NBHM will inaugurate the Honey Hub on December 1, a one-stop shop for various honey products from across Nagaland. Visitors can meet beekeepers, purchase locally-made products, and enjoy Apitherapy sessions and face painting with bee-themed designs.

Additionally, the 5th edition of ‘Nagaland Honey Bee Day 2023’ on December 5 at the Bamboo Hall, Kisama, will celebrate the contributions of honeybees and beekeepers. The NBHM will honor outstanding beekeepers and outline their vision for sustainable beekeeping practices.

Despite challenges, such as limited honey production and funding constraints, NBHM remains optimistic about the project’s success. Deputy Team Leader Er Khuvozoyi Vese emphasized their commitment to outreach programs in rural areas.

As Nagaland embraces Bee Tourism, the NBHM envisions a future where the Honey Hub becomes a permanent fixture, fostering economic growth and preserving the state’s rich natural resources.
