The Popular Seaside Town Loved by British Tourists Named Europe’s Cheapest

With the holiday season now in full swing, many Brits are jetting off to sunny destinations for some well-earned rest and relaxation. Spending a week or two lying on a sandy beach, enjoying good food, and sipping fine wines and beer is the perfect way to recharge.

However, traveling can be challenging, especially when money is tight, particularly for families. According to the Post Office Travel Money Family Holiday Report, “overspending is at a record high: 73 percent of parents exceed their budget by an average of 55 percent on their last holiday with kids.”

In an effort to help parents find the best value resorts and save money, the Post Office teamed up with TUI airline and regional tourist offices to analyze the average costs of purchases such as a cup of coffee, a bottle of beer, a glass of wine, two children’s lunch meals, a two-course meal for adults, and a three-course family meal.

First place went to an Eastern European resort on the Black Sea that is budget-friendly and popular among British holidaymakers: Sunny Beach in Bulgaria. This destination attracts thousands of tourists each year.

Researchers found that a bottle of beer costs £2.07 and a glass of wine £2.76, while a family meal for four costs between £50 to £60. Travelers were advised to avoid restaurants on Flower Street and along the beach, as these have become quite pricey.

One Tripadvisor reviewer, WelshLadyNorthWales, shared some sound advice on where to eat: “We ate with a Bulgarian friend at La Flor one evening. We had three starters, three main meals, three small rakia, three glasses of wine, and a large bottle of water. The total was 106 leva, which worked out to £46.66. We never paid more than 60 leva (£26) for a meal for two.”

Sunny Beach is renowned for its water sports, sand dunes, and nightlife. Its waterfront is lined with a long sandy beach. Inland, visitors can find a paintball park, a go-kart track, and a water park with many slides, providing plenty of entertainment for the whole family.

For those interested in local culture and history, the town of Nessebar is nearby, featuring ancient ruins and an Archaeological Museum with millennia-old pottery and bronze vessels.
