The Bengal government is making significant efforts for improving the tourism infrastructure in the Sunderbans and has asked for the involvement of the private sector, said state tourism minister Indranil Sen.

Sen said that the state government, involving the private sector, is planning to set up eco-friendly hotels and entertainment arenas around the mangrove forest.

Bengal, since 2011, has introduced package tours from the city to the Sunderbans making use of two tourism department vessels that ferry tourists to the jungles and back.

Sen said that the government is also considering the possibilities of starting houseboat services in the next six months in various large water bodies, similar to Kashmir.

The Sunderbans is spread across 10,000sq.km.
