Bali’s island-wide cruise tourism is expected to continue to grow, and, along with other cruise ship destinations, be able to cater to the largest influx of cruise travelers. Expected to continue through 2026, the upgrades to Benoa Harbor, Bali’s main embarkation port, and widening of ship and liner arrivals, not to mention anticipated enormous increase in the passenger and employee count of each ship, will see Bali achieve that status.

The increase in travelers who can afford the precious time to indulge in luxury travel, Bali offers tourists, a seamless embarkation and, smooth transit, into the island’s many cultural, geographical and esthetic island venues the tourists now expect. This increasing demand manifested itself with the simultaneous arrival of the 51st and 52nd cruise ship arrivals in Bali, the luxury liner Viking Venus and Silver Moon, and their precious passenger count of 2000. 2025 is expected to attract even more ship arrivals.

The Expansion of Benoa Harbor

The significant increase in cruise ship arrivals is supported by the ongoing development of Benoa Harbor. The port, located on the southern coast of Bali, has been undergoing major infrastructural improvements in recent years to accommodate larger vessels. With the ability to welcome up to three jumbo cruise ships simultaneously, Benoa Harbor is rapidly becoming one of the busiest cruise ports in the region.

This focus on upgrading Benoa Harbor is part of a larger effort to transform the port into Bali’s Maritime Tourism Hub, which will feature a range of modern amenities and attractions, including restaurants, hotels, entertainment venues, and leisure facilities.

The Development of Bali Maritime Tourism Hub

The Bali Maritime Tourism Hub is a key initiative designed to position Bali as a leading global destination for cruise and yacht tourism. As part of this vision, a luxury yacht marina is being developed, which will place Bali firmly on the map as a luxury yachting hub.

Nusra Fariz Hariyoso, the Sub-Regional Head of Pelindo Bali, has outlined the plans for the future development of the hub. The project includes the construction of a pontoon dock capable of accommodating around 180 yachts. The marina is being developed in collaboration between PT SPSL and PT MDI, further solidifying Benoa’s role in Bali’s tourism sector.

Increasing Cruise Arrivals

Cruise tourism in Bali has seen a steady upward trend over the past three years, with the number of cruise arrivals growing each year. In 2023, Benoa Harbor welcomed 48 cruise ships, bringing 78,241 passengers. The following year, the number of cruise ships increased to 56, and passenger arrivals rose to 107,717. By mid-2025, the number of cruise arrivals had already reached 51, with 96,013 passengers visiting the island.

Looking ahead, 2026 is expected to be a record-breaking year for cruise tourism in Bali. A total of 73 cruise ships are already scheduled to dock in Benoa Harbor, with the potential for even more vessels to be added as demand for Bali cruises continues to grow.

Security and Infrastructure for Growing Tourism

As Bali continues to experience an influx of international tourists arriving by cruise ships, local authorities have ramped up security measures around Benoa Harbor. Bali Police have increased their presence in the area to ensure the safety and security of tourists and crew members arriving on the cruise ships. This enhanced security is crucial as the number of both tourism vessels and cargo ships visiting the harbor grows.

What This Means for Tourists

The increase in cruise arrivals to Bali offers tourists an excellent opportunity to experience the island’s culture and attractions in a seamless and luxurious way. Cruise ships offer an all-inclusive experience, allowing passengers to explore Bali’s temples, beaches, and cultural landmarks without the hassle of organizing transportation or accommodations. For those seeking an immersive Balinese experience, these cruises provide access to guided tours of Bali’s historical sites, including Tanah Lot Temple, Uluwatu Temple, and the Sacred Monkey Forest Sanctuary in Ubud.

Bali’s cruise-friendly infrastructure allows tourists to make the most of their time on the island, whether they are arriving for a short day trip or a longer stay. The growing popularity of cruise tourism in Bali provides the opportunity to explore new parts of the island and enjoy the hospitality of world-class cruise lines, with luxury services and amenities tailored to meet the needs of international travelers.

Conclusion: Bali’s Bright Future as a Cruise Destination

As cruise tourism continues to grow, Bali is set to become a key player in the global cruise market. With the ongoing development of Benoa Harbor and the Bali Maritime Tourism Hub, the island is positioned to become a leading destination for cruise ships and luxury yachts. The upgrade of infrastructure, coupled with an expanding range of attractions and amenities, ensures that Bali will remain a top destination for cruise travelers seeking a blend of culture, relaxation, and adventure.
