Passenger traffic at BER saw a marginal rise in December due to the commencement of the Christmas season. Approximately 1.77 million passengers traveled through Berlin Brandenburg Airport, compared to around 1.75 million in the preceding month of November, as per the provisional traffic report. Contrastingly, in December 2022, only 1.53 million passengers were recorded at BER, whereas in December 2019, Tegel and Schönefeld airports collectively served 2.6 million passengers before the pandemic hit.

December 2023 witnessed about 13,600 flight movements, indicating an increase of approximately 1,400 flights compared to the same month in the prior year. However, in December 2019, Tegel and Schönefeld airports recorded nearly 21,200 flight movements.

Throughout 2023, BER catered to a total of 23.07 million passengers, signifying an increase of 3.22 million from the previous year (2022). Nevertheless, this figure remained 12.6 million lower than the pre-pandemic levels. The total number of aircraft take-offs and landings reached 176,649, marking a 7.5 percent increase from 2022 but falling short of the 277,600 recorded in 2019.

Cargo volumes in December 2023 escalated by 14 percent compared to the pre-pandemic levels of December 2019, with approximately 3,200 tonnes of air cargo loaded at BER. The total cargo handled in 2023 amounted to 34,038 tonnes, showing nearly a 7 percent rise from 2022’s 31,827 tonnes but lower than the 2019 figure of 35,000 tonnes.

Aletta von Massenbach, the Chief Executive Officer of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH, stated, “The demand for air travel continued its upward trajectory in 2023. Approximately 20 million individuals utilized BER for international and inbound flights to Berlin, reaching 73 percent of the pre-pandemic levels. This signifies a sustained interest in travel for leisure purposes. Furthermore, we managed to reach the 2019 benchmark for long-haul connections last year.”
