BermudAir Shakes Up US Market: Major Route Cuts and Exciting Expansions Ahead – What This Means for Travelers!

Published on December 1, 2025

BermudAir, Bermuda’s first locally established airline, has been evolving since its launch a couple of years ago. Initially receiving its air operator’s certificate from the Bermuda Civil Aviation Authority in July 2023, BermudAir started flying in September of the same year. With its base at L.F. Wade International Airport in Bermuda, the airline quickly grew its operations, offering services to destinations in the United States and eastern Canada. According to Cirium, an aviation analytics provider, BermudAir scheduled over 2,800 flights in 2025.

The United States has been a core market for the carrier, with several new routes added this year alone. Newark, Charleston, LaGuardia, Providence, Raleigh/Durham, and Richmond are just some of the destinations BermudAir now serves. With 12 destinations in total in the U.S., its network has expanded significantly from its Bermuda hub. However, despite this growth, the airline has recently made the decision to withdraw from several U.S. routes.

Route Discontinuations: A Shift in Strategy

As part of its ongoing network adjustments, BermudAir has ceased operations to several destinations it had launched only a short time ago. Fort Lauderdale, which had been launched in 2023, was discontinued earlier this year. Initially serviced six times a week, the route was reduced to just two flights per week by 2025 before being completely dropped. Similarly, flights to Rhode Island’s T.F. Green International Airport were also canceled just a month and a half after the service began.

In another significant move, BermudAir announced that it would end services to Charleston and Bradley International Airport in Hartford. These terminations reflect a broader trend in the airline’s strategy as it continues to recalibrate its U.S. presence. Notably, it has also decided to end its flights to Richmond and Raleigh/Durham, both of which will no longer be served by BermudAir starting in January 2026. The decision to cut these routes is likely to have an impact on the affected regions, especially Richmond, which had not seen international flights for several years before BermudAir introduced its service.

Why the Airline Is Focusing on Key Markets

While BermudAir has been focused on expanding its presence in the U.S., its recent moves signal a strategic shift. Initially, the airline concentrated on flying to secondary airports across the country. However, recent changes reflect a shift towards higher-demand, major gateways. Newark Liberty and LaGuardia airports were added to the network in October, signaling BermudAir’s intention to operate at more strategic hubs. These airports are key gateways in the East Coast, which should help the airline capture more traffic from both leisure and business travelers.

This shift is not only about moving to more important airports but also about expanding frequencies. In June 2026, BermudAir plans to increase the number of flights it operates to Newark, demonstrating its confidence in these high-traffic routes. This expansion is an important step for the airline as it looks to solidify its position in North America.

BermudAir’s Expansion Beyond Bermuda

In addition to adjustments in the U.S., BermudAir has expanded beyond Bermuda with the launch of a new operation in Anguilla, a British Overseas Territory in the Leeward Islands. The carrier introduced a subsidiary brand, AnguillAir, which operates an Embraer E190 aircraft. This new venture marks the first significant expansion for BermudAir beyond its Bermuda hub.

Starting in December 2025, AnguillAir will begin flying three new routes from Clayton J. Lloyd International Airport in Anguilla to Baltimore, Boston, and Newark. These new routes will provide Anguilla with a direct connection to major U.S. cities, something the island has lacked in the past. Historically, travelers from Anguilla have had to go through Puerto Rico to connect to international flights. However, with the introduction of AnguillAir, this will no longer be necessary, marking a significant improvement in the island’s international connectivity.

Growth in Canadian Market and Future Plans

BermudAir’s expansion strategy also includes growing its presence in Canada. In 2024, the airline launched flights to Toronto Pearson International Airport and Halifax Stanfield International Airport. With around four weekly flights to Toronto and two to Halifax, the carrier has successfully tapped into the growing demand for flights between Bermuda and Canada.

The Canadian market remains competitive, but BermudAir is benefitting from the absence of direct competition on some routes. For example, Air Canada had planned a service between Bermuda and Montreal for summer 2026, but the airline has now decided to cancel the service, which bodes well for BermudAir’s future prospects in the region.

Looking ahead, BermudAir is eager to continue its growth. The airline has indicated interest in expanding further into the Atlantic, with plans to fly to Europe in the long-term. However, this will depend on the airline’s ability to scale its operations and secure the required aircraft to meet the growing demand. For now, BermudAir operates a fleet of Embraer E190s and E170s, which are well-suited to the airline’s current regional network but may not be sufficient for transatlantic flights.

Financial Challenges and Future Outlook

Despite the positive expansion plans, BermudAir faces some financial challenges. The airline is currently embroiled in a legal dispute with Skyport, the operator of L.F. Wade International Airport, over unpaid airport fees and charges. The outcome of this dispute could impact BermudAir’s ability to sustain its growth plans, particularly if it is unable to resolve its financial obligations.

However, the airline remains optimistic about its future prospects, and its strategic adjustments indicate a commitment to long-term growth. Whether it can continue expanding successfully while managing financial pressures remains to be seen, but BermudAir is clearly focused on establishing itself as a key player in the transatlantic and North American aviation market.
