Bohol Tourism Recovery on the Horizon: Resilience Shines Amidst Challenges, Reigniting Hope for a Brighter Future

Published on November 21, 2025

Bohol, the picturesque province in the Philippines, is showing hopeful signs of tourism recovery after facing a difficult period. The COVID-19 pandemic, followed by environmental challenges and typhoons, significantly impacted the island’s economy. However, stakeholders in Bohol’s tourism industry now believe the province is on the verge of bouncing back to its pre-pandemic glory.

Tourism Resurgence: A Ray of Hope for Bohol’s Economy

Bohol has long been a favorite among travelers, with its pristine beaches, iconic Chocolate Hills, and unique wildlife. In recent weeks, tourism professionals have expressed growing optimism. The first indication of recovery came with the return of international tourists, particularly from South Korea. This week, Korean visitors were seen crowding the famous beaches of Panglao Island, marking a hopeful milestone.

Dr. Doloreich Dumaluan, a prominent resort owner and director of the Panglao Island Chamber of Commerce and Industry, highlighted the significance of this development. He said the return of international visitors, especially Koreans, signals a positive shift in tourism. “Let us pray and hope this will continue,” he expressed, emphasizing that this could mark the beginning of the much-needed recovery.

Challenges Remain: Typhoons and Inflation

Despite the optimism, the tourism industry in Bohol is still reeling from several challenges. Environmental issues, typhoons such as Typhoon Tino (Kalmaegi) and Typhoon Uwan (Fung-wong), have disrupted operations in the past. These natural disasters, combined with rising inflation and high travel costs, contributed to a significant decline in tourist arrivals.

In 2024, Bohol recorded 1.4 million tourist arrivals, a mix of both domestic and international visitors. By the third quarter of 2025, however, this number had dropped significantly to just over 400,000. The loss of revenue has had a direct impact on local workers in the tourism sector, with some resort employees being placed on unpaid leave due to the low booking numbers.

The Struggle to Maintain Competitive Pricing

A key concern among visitors to Bohol is the rising cost of tourism services. Some tourists have expressed disappointment with what they perceive as high prices for accommodations, food, and activities. The reputation of Bohol as a “golden” destination, meaning overpriced and overrated, is now becoming a serious issue. This perception, if left unaddressed, could further discourage visitors from returning or recommending the destination.

Local officials and business groups are keenly aware of this growing concern. Provincial Board Member Jiselle Rae Villamor acknowledged the drop in tourist numbers as a “pressing concern” and stressed the importance of addressing these issues. She noted that efforts must be made to ensure fair pricing, enhance service standards, and implement stricter regulations to protect the long-term viability of Bohol’s tourism industry.

Bohol’s Tourism Strategy: A Unified Effort to Recover

To address these issues and rebuild its tourism sector, Bohol’s leaders are looking towards a coordinated recovery strategy. Villamor has proposed the creation of a Bohol Tourism Summit, a collaborative effort involving national agencies, airlines, resort owners, and local stakeholders. This summit will aim to devise a plan to increase arrivals and promote the province as a top travel destination once again.

Gelena Asis Dimpas, the Department of Tourism’s Assistant Regional Director, also emphasized the need to diversify Bohol’s tourism offerings. Rather than relying solely on its beaches and famous landmarks, Dimpas urged stakeholders to explore inland and upland tourism options. Agritourism, heritage trails, forest wellness activities, and faith-based tourism routes are all promising avenues to expand Bohol’s tourism portfolio, benefiting both communities and the environment.

Bohol’s Future: A Collaborative Effort for Growth

In the face of these challenges, there is a clear message: Bohol’s tourism industry must adapt to survive. With the joint efforts of government bodies, local businesses, and the community, the province can recover and continue to attract visitors from all over the world. By focusing on sustainable growth, improving the tourist experience, and ensuring fair pricing, Bohol can maintain its position as one of the Philippines’ most beloved destinations.

The collaboration between the private and public sectors, alongside increased marketing efforts, will be crucial to regaining international confidence. With global competition from countries like Thailand, Vietnam, and Indonesia, which are actively promoting affordable travel packages, Bohol’s tourism industry must remain vigilant and innovative.

A Resilient Future: Hope for Bohol’s Tourism Industry

Bohol’s tourism recovery is not only important for the province’s economy but also for the livelihoods of countless families who depend on it. As resort workers, tricycle drivers, farmers, and local suppliers wait for the industry to bounce back, the spirit of resilience and hope remains strong.

“The tourism sector is not just about beautiful beaches and stunning landscapes,” said Villamor. “It is about livelihoods, dignity, and hope for every Boholano family.” The return of tourists, while still slow, brings renewed hope to this cherished province. Bohol’s road to recovery will not be quick, but with the right strategy, the island’s beauty and charm will once again capture the hearts of travellers from all corners of the globe.

Bohol’s Path to a Thriving Tourism Industry

Bohol’s tourism sector is in the early stages of recovery, and the signs are encouraging. With renewed international interest, ongoing efforts to diversify offerings, and a commitment to fair pricing and high service standards, Bohol can overcome its current challenges. The province’s tourism industry is resilient, and the future looks bright for this popular destination.

As the year progresses, Bohol’s recovery will be a story of perseverance, collaboration, and the collective effort of all its stakeholders. In the end, Bohol’s ability to rise above these challenges will ensure its place as a prime destination for years to come.
