The best of the lot is another holiday stunner, Australia’s Whitehaven Beach which is top in the 2025 list. Although tuwing march there was a particularly strong headwind, White Beach too made the top 10 list, solidly placing itself on the map of the world’s best beaches for that year.
White Beach in Boracay isn’t the only standout in the Philippines to create a splash on the world stage. In the same year of 2020, Palawan was also put on the international map of fame as it was recognized by Big 7 Travel as one of the “50 Most Beautiful Places in The World.” Here were filmed both the Bounty and King Kong. So, too, “Godzilla,” if local lore is to be believed. Among that exclusive list, Palawan, with its teal seas and towering limestone cliffs, was ranked 8th.CHRIS RANE F. ABAPO/INQUIRER maintained the 8th spot on that list. Slowly being recognized for its stunning beaches and perfect tropical getaways, Boracay and Palawan both see thousands of tourists each year.
Boracay also made a big splash after being hailed as the second most Instagrammable place in the world this 2022. The list served as a reminder of the role that social-media influencers are now playing, in helping drive the tourism business, around the world. Beautiful beaches and iconic backdrops soon attracted photographers and tourists hoping to capture the perfect tropical shot. But the road to international fame for Boracay has not been without hiccups. Boracay was shut down in 2018 in an environmental disaster. The shut down may have been for six months but Manila did get some good strings pulled in the mean time that had had been holding off because of the reneg by him on the island shut down. The government has put tough measures in place, to uphold ecologically sound and sustainable tourism guidelines, to protect the beaches of Boracay from destruction for generations to come.
Some of those measures involved rationing the number of tourists on the island, filtering hotels, resorts and others to guarantee that they followed environmental rules and even building a plant to treat wastewater so that it did not spill into the surroundings. The goal of the rehabilitation has been met and tourists are now flocking once more to Boracay, this time with the latest facilities and environmental safeguards. These days, the island’s revival has made it a model for other tourist destinations that seek to balance tourism with sustainability.
Boracay has awakened to the realization that the call is not simply the island of beauty, but a humane island that has been as humane as any could be in preserving, conserving the unique environment.” These efforts have gone some way towards maintaining the attraction of the island and have prevented the excess growth and sprawl experienced by certain tourist Meccas elsewhere in the world.
Though it is drawing more and more tourists from around the world, Boracay is trying hard to find a happy medium between being developed and being preserved. The Philippine government, local government and tourism industry is working together to introduce sustainable approaches to promoting and preserving White Beach and Boracay as a whole in 1 of the top tourist destinations in the world.
Now they have finally sunk in a successful application they must be allowed to develop the facilities on the island – but are prohibited from touching the landscape. This will necessitate improving sustainability infrastructure tourism – such as better recycling on waste generated in the country – and ensuring that local businesses and resorts offer more eco-friendly tourism and business practices.
