Plus Architecture, an international architectural firm, has recently introduced its plans for a groundbreaking boutique hotel and short-term accommodation development at Kangaroo Point, setting the stage for a revolutionary transformation in Brisbane’s hospitality landscape. This development, situated at 25-35 Rotherham Street, aims to introduce an unprecedented level of luxury to the suburb, particularly in anticipation of the 2032 Olympic Games, thereby significantly enhancing Brisbane’s accommodation offerings.

The Rotherham Hotel, designed to serve as a modern urban sanctuary, redefines the boutique hotel concept with its innovative approach. The hotel is meticulously planned across 16 levels, covering a total area of 15,500 sqm. With 179 rooms, the development is set to feature an array of premium amenities including wellness experiences, a rooftop infinity pool, spaces for entertainment, cutting-edge conference facilities, and a culinary destination set to compete on a world-class level.

Drawing inspiration from its prime location, the design of the Rotherham Hotel pays tribute to the iconic Story Bridge and the architectural heritage of its surroundings, while also establishing its unique identity. This homage is evident in the hotel’s distinctive green brickwork and the bold geometric shapes that mirror the bridge’s design elements. Additionally, large ‘porthole’ shaped windows reference the bridge’s foundations, offering expansive views of Brisbane’s skyline and river, thereby fostering a deep connection with the city’s sub-tropical environment.

The hotel’s design strategy places a strong emphasis on storytelling and bespoke design, targeting a new wave of travelers who prioritize dynamic, artfully curated accommodation options. Chrisney Formosa, a principal at Plus Architecture, highlighted the Rotherham Hotel’s strategic positioning to meet the growing demand for vibrant travel experiences in the post-pandemic era. This is further accentuated by the hotel’s embrace of Brisbane’s subtropical climate, featuring lush landscaping across all levels and a design that integrates greenery from the ground floor to the rooftop.

The development’s design encourages interaction with the public space, incorporating a pedestrian laneway and a terraced stairway entrance, enhancing the street’s vitality. Moreover, the hotel’s design cleverly utilizes the site’s natural slope to include a spacious double-height porte-cochere, offering both aesthetic appeal and practical benefits.

As part of Plus Architecture’s expanding portfolio in premium hospitality across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region, the Rotherham Hotel is poised to attract top-tier hotel and restaurant operators. This addition not only signifies the firm’s dedication to leading-edge, timeless design but also forecasts a substantial impact on tourism by attracting a global audience, thereby contributing significantly to Brisbane’s readiness for the upcoming 2032 Olympic Games.
