British Airways has unveiled a comprehensive £7 billion plan to revolutionize the airline, announced at its inaugural ‘In the Skies’ event in London. Sean Doyle, the Chairman and CEO, presented a modernization strategy aimed at enhancing customer experience, updating IT infrastructure, boosting employee morale, prioritizing sustainability, and improving punctuality.

“We’re on a journey to a better BA for our people and for our customers, underpinned by a transformation programme that will see us invest £7bn over the next two years to revolutionise our business,” Sean Doyle, British Airways’ Chairman and CEO, said. “We’re going to take delivery of new aircraft, introduce new cabins, elevate our customer care, focus on operational performance and address our environmental impact by reducing our emissions and creating a culture of sustainability. We’re also heavily investing in the development of a new ba.com website and app and are laser-focused on transforming our business and fixing any pain points for our customers.”

As part of its enhancement program, British Airways is set to revamp its digital presence with an updated website and mobile app aimed at offering personalized services. The new ba.com is currently being tested, designed to allow customers more control over their travel plans through online management tools, reducing the need to contact customer service for changes. This update is expected to start rolling out by year’s end.

British Airways is also improving in-flight connectivity for its Executive Club Members by offering free messaging on WiFi-enabled flights from April 3, becoming the first airline to provide a WiFi-enabled inflight customer care solution, developed with Microsoft. This allows for real-time issue resolution at 35,000 feet.

The airline is investing £100 million in technology, including machine learning, automation, and AI, to enhance various operational aspects from booking to baggage handling, aiming to speed up departures and minimize disruptions. New roles are being created at Heathrow to enhance customer service, alongside investments in new ground equipment.

A new lounge design concept is being introduced, with the first new lounge opening in Dubai, followed by Miami in 2025. This is part of British Airways’ efforts to refresh its customer lounges worldwide.

For its fleet, British Airways is introducing new seats and cabin interiors for its short-haul Airbus A320neo and A321neos, featuring a modern British design and larger overhead bins. Additionally, a new exclusive First suite is in the pipeline for its A380 aircraft refurbishment.

The airline is resuming flights to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, and Abu Dhabi, and launching new routes to Agadir and Izmir, indicating its commitment to expanding its Asian network post-pandemic.

Sustainability is a key focus, with British Airways aiming for net zero emissions by 2050 or sooner, as part of its BA Better World programme. This includes a significant agreement with e-SAF producer ‘Twelve’ for advanced sustainable aviation fuel, underscoring its dedication to reducing the environmental impact of aviation.
