Brussels Airlines welcomed its new Airbus A320neo, freshly delivered from Airbus in Toulouse, to its home base at Brussels Airport. This marks a significant milestone for the airline, as it’s the first time they have received planes directly from the manufacturer. The A320neo is environmentally friendly, consuming less fuel, emitting fewer CO2 emissions, and reducing noise pollution by 50% compared to previous generation aircraft.

Here are some key facts about the A320neo:
• Neo stands for “New Engine Option”
• Offers up to 20% less fuel consumption than the previous generation aircraft
• Replacing smaller A319 aircraft in Brussels Airlines fleet, carrying more passengers with 30% reduced fuel consumption per seat
• Equipped with 180 seats
• Provides up to 50% noise footprint reduction
• Brussels Airlines plans to add a total of 5 A320neo aircraft to its fleet by the end of 2024.

Today, OO-SBA, the first of 5 Airbus A320neo airplanes, landed at Brussels Airport, marking its entry into the Brussels Airlines fleet.

Focus on sustainability
The sustainability goals of Lufthansa Group and Brussels Airlines are high. The airlines intend to become carbon neutral by 2050 and cut their net carbon emissions in half by 2030 when compared to 2019.

The aircraft, powered by the LEAP-1A engine from CFM International, saves 3,700 tons of carbon equivalents annually. With reduced fuel consumption, it offers 500 km more range than its predecessor. The 2.40-meter-long wingtips, or sharklets, further save 800 tons of carbon equivalents per aircraft each year.

Enhanced passenger experience
The new aircraft will enhance passenger experience as it represents a 50% noise reduction, compared to its predecessors. The new baggage compartments have a 40% larger volume and can hold 60% more suitcases, as these can be stowed vertically in the compartments.

Dorothea von Boxberg, CEO, Brussels Airlines said, “Brussels Airlines has worked hard on becoming profitable. The first brand-new aircraft for our airline shows the continued support and trust of Lufthansa Group in our team. I would like to thank all our team members working on making Brussels Airlines successful.”
