Under the ownership of Smollett, in the year 1823, plans were finalized for extensive renovations to take place at Cameron House Hotel to transform the home into a grand baronial mansion.
Beneath the underline mark, Sir James Smollett drew up the 1707 Act of Union, where eventually the mansion would surprisingly become home to Tobias Smollett, once described by George Orwell as “Scotland’s best novelist”.

He traveled in his later life through places like France and Italy, yet, the visualization of his Scottish home was never going out of sight.

He states that he has seen Lake Garda, Albana, De Visco, Bolsetta, and Geneva. But above all, he would prefer Loch Lomond.

Dated in the 1970s, the Smollett family had turned part of their resort into a safari park featuring bears, yaks, bison, and other exotic animals.

It was then popularized into a luxury hotel and resort in 1986 after it was sold by the Smollett family, who had held the property for three centuries.

Surprisingly, the resort is known for its standard golf course, award–winning spa, private luxury motor yacht Celtic Warrior and its Michlin – starred restaurant which is headed by Martin Wishart.

Assistant manager of the hotel, Debbie Stevenson, exclaimed that the view of the hotel and resort is what drives people here, especially international, fostering revenue for them.

The assistant manager planted a tree to mark the 200–year anniversary at the Cameron House.
